What could be considered a dubious rent due to the topical nature of the comedy is perhaps better than watching the current series. The DVD is so well edited it contains tremendous laugh-out-loud moments and endless well edited gags that never leave you confused as to whether youve missed some by-gone topical gag.
Once, its been watched you can go back and re-watch the DVD with commentary from Hislop and Merton and hear their far from impartial views and anecdotes on contestants, politics and haircuts. This is just as funny if not funnier from a well teamed pair of cynic and surreal comedians.
Although some jokes may be reminiscent (the tub of lard, Paul Mertons embarrassing Deayton T-Shirt), the humour value is tremendously entertaining and is well worth a rent as it can easily take up a whole evening.
There is also fascinating watching of seeing top UK stories discussed with a hindsight of how they panned out that is just as good as the comedy. Some clips even contain an element of nostalgia with one of the first shows Deayton ending on Its goodbye from me and it looks like its good bye from her [shows: clip of Thatcher: Good-bye]
Overall, harsh un-PC comedy that sadly it seems modern BBC comedy have lost the formula for.
As you'd expect with the phrase 'Very Best of' in the title, this is a complilation DVD with no complete episodes. Instead it's a load of clips from each year of the show from 1990 to 2002 -- including a short clip from the untelevised 'Pirate Video' release. (The menu allows you to choose which year to start from but then goes right through to the end.)
What mars the DVD for me is that I was always more of an Angus Deayton fan and unsurprisingly he's missing from the DVD's commentary (which is just Ian and Paul), which also fails to include any really positive comments about Angus and gives the impression that they think the success of the show was just down to themselves, and then as if to rub it in that this DVD isn't for the likes of me it ends with clips from the show following the News of the Worlds' expose on Angus that I still find uncomfortable to watch, but evidently Paul and Ian don't.
Period drama Cranford, which stars Oscar winner Dame Judi Dench, dominates the field in the nominations for this year's British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) TV awards. The show has picked up four nods, including Programme of the Year and a Best Actress nomination for Dench. Dame Judi, who won her Oscar for her portrayal of Elizabeth I in Shakespeare In Love and also plays James Bond's spymaster boss M, will be up against Gina McKee (The Street), Eileen Atkins (Cranford) and...
