    [Highly rated reviewer]

Haxan is an amazing document of a movie. It's the result of three years filming by director Benjamin Christensen in isolation at his own studio in Sweden, only his cast and crew being permitted. It is structured like a Magic Lantern lecture - the first chapter is reminiscent of a fantastical Powerpoint presentation. We follow 'the witch' as perceived and treated during the inquisition of the Medieval era. It shifts from docu-drama to arcane reenactment of purported devilry. In visual style and modus, it most resembles Jodorowsky's 'Holy Mountain' - or, actually, vise versa. The disc includes 3 variant soundtracks, the original score plus two modern interpretations, and, the 1968 version with a narrative by William S Burroughs. The restored print (from the original premiered copy) is spectacular.

Simply stunning images, quirky tone and a powerful presence. Not often you hear that said about a documentary. At the time this would have been extraordinarily powerful.

how the hell has this only got a 3 star rating here? If people consider this film average i would love to hear there explanation since the film has been a sucess for 90 years & has a rating of 7. 7 on IMDB!

This film is far from average it is a truly great film/documentary but will be lost on people who carnt appreciate silent movies.

Superb, albeit a little long. I really enjoyed this as a historical piece and a bit of entertainment.

Although dated, I feel the focus of modern public hysteria has just shifted away from witchcraft onto other social devils which makes the sentiment of this film relevant in modern times.

I can see how this would have caused a huge outcry in it's day, it's the kind of brave film making that's hard to come by nowadays.

A very nicely restored print with excellent colour tinting. Some of the scenes very well done - the account by the supposed witch Maria, which describes witches flying to the sabbat and young girls kissing the devil's arse.

Other scenes are more laboured such as the initial lecture with woodcuts and the later modern section which equates witchcraft with hysteria and modern psychiatric practice. Some of this might be more bearable with the other version of the film included on the disk, which is narrated by William Burroughs and which has a modern score.

All in all an interesting curio. recommended to those who want to see such a thing (silent, ambitious, exploitative, occasionally very effective, highly unusual, sometimes risable) despite my two star rating - and how many films truly merit 4 or 5 stars anyway?

Having been on my must watch list for a few years and knowing very little about it i'd hyped this film up into something of a horror classic, something that would be scarier than nosferatu or der golem. To my surprise it was actually a documentary, completely unscary and actually quite funny. Its quite a unique film as i don't know of any other films of its kind for when it was made. Its very entertaining, informative and witty and theres not many films in which you can see a bunch of nuns go nuts (sister act doesn't count cos it ain't funny). If you like the german expressionism give this a go, its something of an unsung classic
