This superb sports drama from writer/director Spike Lee sets out to prove that basketball is not just a game, but rather an essential part of the American way of life. From the opening shots of young men at obsessive play set to music by Aaron Copland, Lee sets the tone of a world in which Jake Shuttlesworth (a powerful portrayal by Denzel Washington) is allowed out of prison — where he's serving a term for his wife's manslaughter — to talk his son, Jesus (real-life pro Ray Allen), into becoming part of the prison warden's old college basketball team, and get himself paroled into the bargain. The confrontations feel real, the games have tension and the underlying message is universally scathing — sport is no longer for kudos, but purely for the money.

Anyone that loves basketball will love this film. Not much basketball but the story is cool, totally recomend this to all those who have dreamt about making it in pro ball.
I love Denzal and I love Spike Lee films but the acting was so poor in this film and the story so flaky I got bored and just switched it off. Now for someone who is such a fan that is saying something!
This Sporting Life: What Happens When Sports Heroes Act Up? Eric Cantona and Ken Loach. These are not names you would immediately put together. One is a multi-millionaire (surely?) ex footballer, revered by millons of fans; and French. The other is a proud socialist from middle-England (Nuneaton), who has rejected the big money offers; his films are admired but by a relatively small number of committed film buffs.
