    [Highly rated reviewer]

At the centre of this film is a beautiful but easily bored and somewhat narcissistic young man - his own mother calls him an airhead - who exerts such charm on others that they become drawn to him and fall in love with him whilst he, although giving completely the opposite impression, remains aloof and indifferent. The more attached they become to him, the more detached he becomes, until, finally, he leaves them twisting in the wind and moves on to a new audience. The film shows the experiences of his latest two victims interspersed with the reminiscences of people who have previously suffered at his hands. What is confusing about that? It is a sharply observed and witty film with some cracking dialogue, and the fact that I have to access it through subtitles rather than being able to understand French directly is my own fault, not the film's. The performances are impeccable, and I shall be watching out for Monia Chokri, a new name to me, but excellent in this, brilliantly suggesting the neediness and pain beneath a would-be cynical and cool exterior. Don't be put off by the 'I didn't understand it therefore it's crap' school - rent it, watch it, enjoy it.

Rented the movie after watching Laurence, Anyways a few days ago. Xavier Dolan is a great director and he is only 23!!! No way. Heartbeats is a beautiful, artistic movie and it helps you understand the director's world and obsessions. Btw, go watch Laurence, Anyways. The quality of his last film and the progress he has made are amazing.

Dolan's stylized film is entertaining and sensitive. Great acting on all parts and a good score. The story is easy to relate to and follow and carries a moral tone for us all. Watch out Hollywood Dolan is coming...

This film won’t be for all tastes but if you like world cinema and are prepared to stick with the slowish start, you’ll find yourself wanting to know what happens. Frank and Marie, two friends, meet Nico at a dinner party. Nico is gorgeous and he knows it and both Frank and Marie are attracted to him. I won’t give the plot away but pay close attention to the scenes where unknown characters are talking about their broken relationships.

There are several things I really liked about this film. The very stylish shots of Marie walking in slow motion in her vintage garb were a treat. The scene where Frank and Marie are talking about Nico’s mother at the party when they’re dancing under the flashing lights had me laughing out loud. The final showdown between Marie and Nico is excruciatingly embarrassing and nothing gets lost in translation.

From the haunting, beautifully sung music to the beautiful people, the film showed you what the characters were feeling. What deep emotions! A feel good movie.

    Agree totally with 'So Confusing'-

Complete waste of time too many characters doing nothing but talking. No plot,no action-sweet nothing! But the music`s not bad!
