Don't allow the fact that Michael Lehmann directed Hudson Hawk put you off his stunning debut — a prime cult movie about an all-girl high-school clique that terrorises fellow students. Their actions prompt Winona Ryder and Christian Slater (firing on all cylinders like a young Jack Nicholson) to engineer a rash of deaths to break the clique's hold on their schoolmates who are a clueless bunch of college Swatchdogs and Diet Coke-heads. Beneath the hip, lip-glossed surface of this devastatingly witty black comedy lurks a serious satire on peer-group pretensions and other teen movies. But the message never gets in the way of the snappy dialogue or on-target jabs at the in-crowd lunacy of high-school life.
A wicked black comedy about teenage suicide and pernicious peer-group pressure, this refreshing parody of high-school... read more on Time Out
The premise of a teen comedy starring Winona Ryder, Christian Slater and Shannen Doherty may seem about as irresistible as a 'Blossom' Reunion Tour, but this is a surprisingly dark and cynical satire that is sharper than anything released since.
The 'Heathers' are a select clique of croquet-playing meanies all called Heather. Winona Ryder's character is desperate to join the group - strange considering she spends most of the film complaining about them - but it's not until she meets Christian Slater's mysterious outsider that she finally decides to use murder as a means of social cleansing.
It's slow to start with, but once Slater and Ryder begin their Bonnie and Clyde-style antics, the true power of 'Heathers' is achieved. It delivers wickedly funny jabs at middle-class students, laid-back parents and fluffy-minded educators; its real target is hypocrisy and self-importance, and even though the high school setting ties it down a bit at the beginning and the end, the film as a whole is brilliantly effective.
I think this may be my favourite film ever. I really adore satire and black comedy, this film does both exquisitely well. Straight off from the croquet balls to the head, the lunch room poll topic and the epic word of the use myriad.
Beautifully written, well acted for the young cast who 3 of have carried their film careers on till now. Still slightly chilling when you have a popular person doing something then being mimicked by an uncool person, and being mocked for it.
The one liners are thick and fast, still quotable today. Essentially this film is about a geek done good-bad-good-bad-good in a confusing circle, god love Veronica.
If you like high school, black or satirical comedies then this is a definite for you. If you were ever victimised as a kid or ever wanted to get your own back then this film gives some great ideas of how not to get caught dealing out the dish best served cold.
Winona Ryder's cult hit Heathers is lined up for a modern makeover - the film is set to be adapted for the small screen as a series. The 1989 film is set to be made into a TV show 20 years after it originally became an cult classic, and the programme will feature all the original characters - including Ryder's Veronica Sawyer, a popular girl who rebels against her clique of mean girls, all named Heather. Bosses at Lakeshore Entertainment film company, who hold the rights to Heathers, have... Read more
