After Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July, Oliver Stone turned his attention to the Vietnamese themselves, in particular a village girl called Le Ly (Hiep Thi Le). She endures the horrors of the war only to marry a psychotic American soldier (Tommy Lee Jones), who takes her to California. Unjustly slated by the critics, the picture shows Stone's brilliance in creating scenes of unusual vividness — it's horrifying, beautiful, ugly and moving all at the same time. It is also, at times, an unsettling black comedy about cultural and religious rituals that switches from Buddhist shrines in rice paddies to consumerist shrines in supermarkets. There hasn't been such a great politicised melodrama since the heyday of Otto Preminger.
An ambitious and epic film, but too strident to be successful and one that, although ostensibly dealing with the life of a Vietnamese woman, still manages to make the subject-matter that of the American experience in Vietnam and its aftermath; the balance
Heaven and Earth has to be one of the most visually beautiful films I have ever seen, from perfect landscapes to encreditable lighting the cinematography is unbelivable.
We track the life of Le Ly a Vietnam village girl through her life as she grows up in the middle of Vietnam war.
This is drama at its very best, and Oliver Stone really proves that he is one of the great directors of our time, he skillfully guides you on a jounary of love, lose and cultural roots.
The performers are fanastic, and we get a really feeling for the horror of being innocently stuck in the middle of a war.
I'm a hasch marker of films and it really has to be something amazing to get 5 stars but this comes very close.
At times the pacing is a little off, as some scenes are a bit too long while other too short, but this does not take away from what a truly great film this is.
If you like drama get this right now, if you don't just give it a try, this really is one of the best out there.
