Perfect
By Caroline from South Wales , 26 Apr 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
I first saw this film around 25 years ago on a wet Sunday afternoon and I have waited too long to see it again. Sellers is in a serious/tragic role which he plays to perfection allowing the comic skills of others to shine through. It's worth watching alone to see Irene Handl. I just wished that it was raining when I watched again. Perfect!- Was this review helpful to you?

(6)Total and utter rubbish
By a customer , 09 Jun 2013i am both a huge Peter Sellers and a Boulting brothers fan but i thought that this film was barely watchable, I was bored witless and i was relieved when it ended. I surprised that others rated this film highly, i enjoy most old black and white British comedies but i thought it was utter rubbish.- Was this review helpful to you?

Dire. You'd have to be desperate to rent this
By a customer , 27 Dec 2012Why is the Sellers character described as a Northern vicar when he is clearly from the Midlands? This film goes on far too long and overstays its welcome well before the end. The cynical ideology and tired characterisation echoes that of I'm All Right, Jack, but the latter was saved by Sellers' bravura performance. This time his character is limply unfunny. The only interesting part was seeing so many famous personalities and actors from the 1950s, including Malcolm Muggeridge, who contributed the idea on which the film is based. One senses the film was doomed from the start. I will give 1 star because it has a sympathetic black central character which must have been unusual at the time.- Was this review helpful to you?

Great Cast but...
By Darren79 (17 reviews) from London , 12 Dec 2009I remember seeing this film many years ago as a child and liked it. It seemed really funny back then.
How could you go wrong with a film with this cast list, so many great actors.
The trouble is that the film is rather difficult to like as much as I wanted to. It's trying to make a point but leaves you rather dispirited as a result. No one comes out of it in a positive light even the supposed hero. It's very much a broad fantasy wrapped in some sort of reality.
It leaves you with the sense that the writers and directors were saying the religious community are hypocritical but people on the street are a hopeless case anyway.
There are far better Sellers films.
With such a great cast, it should be brilliant but it has too cynical an edge to be enjoyable.- Was this review helpful to you?

Sleeping Sellers
By Sleepystujam (51 reviews) from Edinburgh , 05 Apr 2009Although you can see that it was ahead of its time when released, this has aged. Peter Sellers seems to be sleep walking his way through the film. Obviously trying to be satirical instead of entertaining.- Was this review helpful to you?
