I first saw this film around 25 years ago on a wet Sunday afternoon and I have waited too long to see it again. Sellers is in a serious/tragic role which he plays to perfection allowing the comic skills of others to shine through. It's worth watching alone to see Irene Handl. I just wished that it was raining when I watched again. Perfect!
I remember seeing this film many years ago as a child and liked it. It seemed really funny back then.
How could you go wrong with a film with this cast list, so many great actors.
The trouble is that the film is rather difficult to like as much as I wanted to. It's trying to make a point but leaves you rather dispirited as a result. No one comes out of it in a positive light even the supposed hero. It's very much a broad fantasy wrapped in some sort of reality.
It leaves you with the sense that the writers and directors were saying the religious community are hypocritical but people on the street are a hopeless case anyway.
There are far better Sellers films.
With such a great cast, it should be brilliant but it has too cynical an edge to be enjoyable.
