This is a very underrated movie based on the real-life Scottsboro trial of 1931, when two young white women accused nine black youths of rape.
The film is beautifully shot and evokes a powerful sense of the mindless racial prejudice that pervaded the American South at the time.
The story is engrossing from the outset, with some provocative and emotional scenes. The contrast in the adversarial relationship between the two leading counsel inside the courtroom and their intelligent, heart-warming integrity and honesty outside is a central theme of the storyline.
