Hedwig And The Angry Inch

John Cameron Mitchell is the creator of the off-Broadway hit HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, which he and composer-lyricist Stephen Trask have transformed into a funny, dramatic, and curiously poignant self-described "post-punk neo-glam musical" film, with extra songs and a new instrumental score. Hedwig (played by Mitchell) was born as Hansel in East Berlin. In his twenties, Hansel agrees to undergo a sex change in order to marry a U.S. soldier (Maurice Dean Wint) and escape to America. Unfortunately, the procedure fails, and Hedwig is left with nothing but a sexless "angry inch" between her legs. After being abandoned in a Kansas trailer park by her husband, Hedwig decides to make the most of her situation: She develops a taste for outrageous wigs and costumes, forms a band, and becomes a singer. Hedwig soon meets and falls in love with 17-year-old Tommy (Michael Pitt), who also harbors rock star aspirations, and makes him her musical protege. But Tommy is the one who ends up stealing the superstardom that Hedwig worked for, after stealing Hedwig's songs and claiming them as his own. In order to expose him as a fraud, she embarks on a tour of strip mall restaurants, telling her story to the audience while trailing Tommy on his own tour across America.

Writer/director John Cameron Mitchell adapts his successful off-Broadway rock musical and has a game try at opening up this erratic “rags to bitches” biography of a fictional German transsexual singer (played by Mitchell himself, reviving his stage role for the big screen). Using surreal flashbacks, camp humour, crude animation and glam rock songs, Hedwig is introduced as a young boy called Hansel living in East Berlin before the Wall came down. Having a sex-change operation — which doesn't go quite as planned — to marry a GI and escape to America, Hedwig then has her music and lyrics ripped off by pop sensation Tommy Gnosis. The gender-bending diva subsequently spends her time bemoaning her lot during desperate gigs in seafood restaurants with her band, the Angry Inch. Very much a love it or hate it experience, Mitchell's directorial debut will either seem a poignant trawl through hilarious 1970s trash culture complete with mock David Bowie tunes or a totally dated combination of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Lily Savage on stage. However, limited cult appeal beckons.

  • "...HEDWIG is an exhilarating reinvention of the movie musical....Mitchell plays with the medium, blending flashbacks, fantasies, even bits of clever animation into a brilliantly stylized whole..."

    Hedwig is TRUTH

Within Hedwig and The Angry Inch the narrative construction and the character drive allow you to relate to these truly alienated individuals. By blurring social boundries the piece forces us to reflect upon what our personal reaction to the film means. Not only is the film inspiring, it is also beautifully shot, expertly cast and a true piece of challanging and intensely personal modern cinema.

    Drag-tastic!

One of the most raw, raucous, glammed-up musicals since Rocky Horror! A superb, hilarious and touching bundle of glam rock fun with one of the catchiest tunes ever - couldn't get it out of my head for days.

    Highly recommended!
