...so I can't comment on things like transfer quality, extra features, etc., but I can tell you that this is something I've been looking forward to seeing again since it was shown on BBC2 back in 1993.

It follows a group Munich residents -- mostly music and film students -- from 1960 to 1970; it has a 'central character' (Hermann) who sort of acts as thematic glue between episodes, but each of the 13 segments stands as a film in its own right. (Hermann also links this series with its predecessor, but you don't need to have seen that for this series to make sense.)

I've only seen it once, and that was 12 years ago, but it's stuck with me ever since; this is one DVD I'm *not* going to miss!

  • One of the great works on film.

The intelligence and human warmth that shines throughout this series, as in other great works of art, resonates in the memory and improves when you revisit it with your own, enriched experience of life as I have, decades later. I feel I know these people.

The casting is superb and the narrative has the courage to follow the conflicting interests of the characters with both amusing and terrifying unpredictability. The music never overwhelms the drama and I imagine the director must have found fine actors who are also fine musicians or who have great musical sensiblility.

It's a pleasure to write a review containing such whole-hearted praise. These films deserve it. I could only wish that such ambitious undertaking would inspire TV programmers in the future to get behind this kind of original talent.

I can't add much more than has been said in praise of the Heimat films.....but this second group of films has so much going for it in terms of character portrayal that I can't think of a film that comes close for taking its time to paint the individuals with such a wide palette.

The music is superb......Nikos Mamangakis is so expressive, and obviously given scope by Edgar, who must be a huge fan of his work.

Like the otherfilms.....its a formula that you don't want to end.

Superb German drama that gets you hooked. Follows the family story of series 1 and concentrates in depth on a group of artistic students in 1960s Munich. Highly recommended.

I watched this series on BBC 2 about twenty years ago and was struck by the great shooting, acting and sensitivity to this story telling. Anyone who likes the cinema should watch this admirable film series, it may be slow but when tou are watch one episode, you are drawn inti the film, so many wonderful camoes by some of the actors and a great great german humanist film, highly recommended.

Amazingly, Heimat 2 is perhaps even better than Heimat 1. A huge, unfurling epic made up of the beautifully observed details of young people's lives. Like reading a wonderful novel.
