Interesting and Entertaining
By Martin from St Helens, England , 08 Jul 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
This film promotes itself as the most actual/correct account of the story everyone has already heard, and I did find it interesting to watch. I couldn't help but make comparisons with Wolfgang Petersons epic 'Troy', which was a far more entertaining film, but according to this version, appeared to miss out and/or change part of the sequence of events.
I was quite surprised how differently both Hector and Paris are potrayed compared to 'Troy', with Paris seemingly a stronger and more heroic character and Hector appearing fairly average. Achilles is given a much lesser role here and is not made out to be half the warrior he is made by Brad Pitt.
This story starts with the birth of Paris and progresses gradually on from there also giving much more information about the life of Helen and how she came to Troy.
It was also shown in the film, just how much was thought of the Gods, and this was made clear by certain, quite brutal events.
Whilst some of the acting could have been better, in all this is quite a decent film and worth watching when you have almost 3 hours to spare.- Was this review helpful to you?

(37)Helen of Troy
By Rinz (42 reviews) from London , 05 Feb 2011Being a fan of Greek mythology and having an interest in their stories and legends, I quite enjoyed watching this and I felt it did give the story justice in portraying the events and Helen. Different sources depict different events but overall, this movie gives a good account on the tale of Helen of Troy.- Was this review helpful to you?

Very Good
By a customer from St. Ives , 21 Jan 2009An excellent all round film. Myself and my son's watched it twice and it still doesn't get boring. Plenty of action in the film even though the actual story of Troy has been changed a little.- Was this review helpful to you?

Helen the heroine of the hasty heart
By Charles Brickley from Andover, Hampshire England , 31 Mar 2008Whilst a purerist might argue that the story does not quite follow all the plot lines of Homer's Illiad this was a great improvement over the 'Hollywood Blockbuster' called 'Troy'.
Personally I shall never forgive Sienna Guillory cheating on Colin Firth in 'Love Actually' and here she is up to her old tricks pitting Matthew Marsden against her voyeur husband, James Callis. No wonder he went off and betrayed humanity to the Cylons in Battlestar Galactica.
Despite the inaccuracies this is a well made story that gradually ramps up to fights in front of Troy and does explain that the menfolk of Greece spent ten years laying siege to the great city.
At 175 minutes duration there were times that I thought I had joined them!
A good film to rent, not one that I would add to my personal collection. Worth the money!- Was this review helpful to you?

nearly three stars
By duke51 (142 reviews) from Peterlee , 17 Mar 2008If you have not read the mytholgy of Troy then you will probably enjoy it better than I did. This was obviously made to cash in on the interest crated in the subject by the Brad Pitt film. This film does not explain the motives of the Greek gods,it does not measure up to the Troy movie, or the seldom seen Steve Reeves movie the Wooden Horse of troy or the 1956 version Helen of Troy,Watch it, the please read about the legends behind the story.- Was this review helpful to you?

Why !!
By Ian Whalen from Eastleigh , 28 Dec 2007Well this was Painful compared to the much better Troy at over 2 1/2 hours it is far too long. And whilst the story does include some different facts from Troy it was not as well produced, acted or interesting as Troy. The exception being the actress who played Helen who in my opinion was good.
If you want to watch a film about Sparta and Troy then rent Troy.- Was this review helpful to you?
