Former model Sienna Guillory stars as Helen, the face that launched 1000 ships and the wife of King Menelaus of Sparta. Interesting and Entertaining

This film promotes itself as the most actual/correct account of the story everyone has already heard, and I did find it interesting to watch. I couldn't help but make comparisons with Wolfgang Petersons epic 'Troy', which was a far more entertaining film, but according to this version, appeared to miss out and/or change part of the sequence of events.

I was quite surprised how differently both Hector and Paris are potrayed compared to 'Troy', with Paris seemingly a stronger and more heroic character and Hector appearing fairly average. Achilles is given a much lesser role here and is not made out to be half the warrior he is made by Brad Pitt.

This story starts with the birth of Paris and progresses gradually on from there also giving much more information about the life of Helen and how she came to Troy.

It was also shown in the film, just how much was thought of the Gods, and this was made clear by certain, quite brutal events.

Whilst some of the acting could have been better, in all this is quite a decent film and worth watching when you have almost 3 hours to spare.

    Slow paced and lacking action

It might be unfair to compare this to the Brad Pitt Hollywood blockbuster as it doesn't have the mega cast or the mega budget. But it does cover the same same story so has to suffer some comparison. Although watchable it is very slow in parts. I doubt it would keep teenagers watching it for more than half an hour. It delves deeper into certain background storylines than Troy but fails to come across as authentic. The main actors are all very lightweight and never really demand your sympathy. You always feel you are watching a TV series rather than a film.

As wooden as the Trojan Horse

This film has some seemingly accurate period details. However, it is over-long, very poorly edited, woodenly directed, and all the actors appear to be confused about what they're doing on the set and a little embarassed that they're particpating in this poor & slow film.

It is nice to see so many good British actors appearing in a 'grand epic'. But, a pity that they were so poorly utilised. The director should have taken Paris' place and been run through by Agammemnon's sword.

All in all - one to miss.... unless you've got a lot of time on your hands, and/or want to prove to your wife/girlfriend that you are actually a decent bloke (by comparison with the serious misogynists that inhabit the maleparticipants in this story).

    Terrible

This film is an awful adaptation of the illiad. The story is all over the place, and takes forever to actually get started. I felt that I was actually taking part in the 10 year war-it dragged on so long!

All I can say is thank God for 'Troy' which proves that this story can be done well!

Helen the heroine of the hasty heart

Whilst a purerist might argue that the story does not quite follow all the plot lines of Homer's Illiad this was a great improvement over the 'Hollywood Blockbuster' called 'Troy'.

Personally I shall never forgive Sienna Guillory cheating on Colin Firth in 'Love Actually' and here she is up to her old tricks pitting Matthew Marsden against her voyeur husband, James Callis. No wonder he went off and betrayed humanity to the Cylons in Battlestar Galactica.

Despite the inaccuracies this is a well made story that gradually ramps up to fights in front of Troy and does explain that the menfolk of Greece spent ten years laying siege to the great city.

At 175 minutes duration there were times that I thought I had joined them!

A good film to rent, not one that I would add to my personal collection. Worth the money!

Mistakenly thought this was the Brad Pitt one. Very enjoyable all the same. Looked a bit 'cheap and plasticy' in places such as the storm at sea - obviously not a MEGA budget film but well acted and well worth watching.

    Homage to Homer?

I gave four stars to this movie as a fan of Greek Mythology, some effort has been made to maintain some of Homer's Illiad, but doesn't even go near the feud between Achilles and Agammemnon or how the Gods/Goddesses influenced the 10-year battle for Troy. The title Helen of Troy is accurate in that this film focuses purely on her part in the destruction of Troy, a love story from start to end, worth a watch but don't expect to be entertained by battle scenes which are bizarrely filmed in slow motion making the scenes look like a tv docu-drama....

not as good as troy but more story

as stated in title this film wasn't as good as Troy but then it doesn't have the A list stars and big budget.

But saying that it did go into the story more than Troy as that film glossed over most of it have went on big special effects to very good effect as I did enjoy Troy more than Helen of Troy.

Go ahead and rent this film as it still is a good film though not what I would call a blockbuster.

    with regards

This is such a wonderful film! Thoroughly enjoyable and filled with so much action, romance, drama and intrigue... it's definitely worth seeing! I think it was originally aired on Sky One, but I never had a chance to see it. Rufus Sewell is very powerful in his role..you dislike his character from the start. I was hooked from start to finish, and never stopped to make a brew! I've now bought the film, I feel it can be viewed over and over and over again! Very well made, subtle, very powerful and should be a classic. Enjoy!

    Slow beginning but good ending

I thought this film was more appropriate as a TV series. It had the pondorous beginning and seemingly half hour segments between each set piece. Helen was as wooden as the horse! The action scenes were good and well choreographed.I stayed with it till the end but my wife became bored and went to bed early. I'm pleased I stayed the course but I still give it only one star because it was over long and like other people I found the other Troy with Brad Pitt more entertaining.

    Worth the rent.

I thoroughly enjoyed this dvd, and to be honest i felt it faired allot better than the hollywood adaptation Troy. Rufus sewell delivers a incredibly underrated portrayal of Agamemnon. While although it didn't have the budget of troy, the battle scenes were still excellent, and portrayed a more real account of this story.

I didn't watch this all in one sitting (after all it was a tv adaptation, not all shown in one go), i am definitely glad i rented it.
