Perhaps the most costly art film ever made. Guillermo del Toro's handling of special effects is second to none, forever pertinent and always inventive. Lush cinematography by devoted del Toro collaborator, Guillermo Navarro, bringing palpable textures and vivid colours to the screen. Worth the entrance fee alone to see Hellboy's drunken duet with Abe Sapien, singing 'Can't Smile Without You'. Many of the shots are indisputably beautiful, the story is heartfelt and skilfully acted and the monsters are all ingenious and arresting: Mr. Wink, The Elemental Tree Creature and the absolutely astonishing Angel of Death in particular. The Troll Market is the bar from Star Wars times a thousand, the best line being, 'I'm not a baby. I'm a tumour.' Several parents in the cinema accompanied by their young children actually gasped! You don't get those kind of sick laughs in The Clone Wars! Certainly more of a comedy than the first film, but del Toro's abundance of 'eye-protein' action resonates. A laudable sequel and a brilliant summer blockbuster.
