ALL DEL BREAKS LOOSEBy hunkydomste (48 reviews) from Liverpool , 27 Aug 2008
[Highly rated reviewer]Guillermo del Toro said in an interview not too long ago that with Pan's Labyrinth he just 'went for it', ridding himself from commercial restraints and letting his creativity run free. And creative and fantastically visionary he is. Look at the films he has helmed and there is the gems/arthouse side (Devil's Backbone/Pan's Labyrinth etc.) and there is the blockbuster side (Mimic, Blade 2...). Hellboy spanned that bridge to an extent, Hellboy 2 however is the perfect crossbreed.
There are stunning visuals, creatures and fantasy galore, alongside humourous quips and BIG BADABOOM action. Still, the time has been taken to make the characters much more substantial and the storyline is relevant and involving.
The vast increase of money spent on this sequel is blatant, but by no means wasted. This is one of the greatest directors around given the opportunity to do what he does best: create a hell of a movie with a big solid heart.
Great entertainment that will satisfy both popcorn movie goers as well as conneissures.

Prefer to HellboyBy Uptonmart (6 reviews) , 25 Aug 2011Excellent! Entertaining, dramatic, good looking and funny in places.
I thought it was better than Hellboy both in plot and in visuals.
I'd recommend watching Hellboy first as it explains the characters a lot more.
Luke Goss surprisingly (to me at least) good as the villain - really!
GoodBy a customer from Cardiff , 16 Aug 2011Usual Hellboy stuff, but I enjoyed this, good story and special effects.
Golden but not solid goldBy rav42 (60 reviews) from Romford , 29 Jul 2011hellboy 2 is bigger badder bolder version of the original with lusher set pieces and visuals, which aid the story.
however the story is a somewhat by the numbers affair that for some reason didn't have the human heart of the original film and despite the retention of the uniformly good cast.
I enjoyed it, and i suspect a lot of people will as it keeps the foot to the floor once the action starts.
if you want more demanding stuff you can watch other stuff by Del Toro (though blade 2 falls more into this category), like Pans labyrinth, however I think the Mummy and the mummy returns run this close and you could always turn to the grandaddy of these films with Raiders of the Lost Ark.
