  • A step in the right direction, but perhaps not far enough

If ever there was a film that should have been excellent, it was Henry's Crime. A great line-up including Vera Farmiga fresh off the excellent Up In The Air, the ever-enjoyable James Caan, and the nostalgia-heavy Bill 'the Green Beret's gonna kick your big ass' Duke. Casting Keanu Reeves as the lead may have been a risky decision due to his recent vacuum of excellent performances, however, I would go so far as to say that I believe he suits the role of Henry Torne; a withdrawn, slightly out-of-touch-with-reality man trying to re-discover himself.

My personal feeling is that the failing of the film is in the story-arc of the script, perhaps not surprising given that David White is best known for testosterone B-movies, and Sacha Gervasi has yet to discover real depth in his writing. The script utilises the plot device of using a situational allegory to vocalise the underlying, unspoken emotional relationship between the key characters. While an excellent technique, this is where the screenplay seems to have confused itself; most of the screen-time is spent on the main plot of the film, however, the film's ending focuses upon this relationship, something that has comparatively little screen-time. A film's ending generally points towards the main themes. Not so with Henry's Crime, I was left with the impression that the scriptwriters decided to fundamentally change the focus of the film close to the end of writing, as this side-theme was not sufficiently explored earlier.

This aside, it's certainly worth a watch. I'm glad to see Keanu Reeves stepping more into the indie circuit, which may be a very good move for him. I'm saddened by the not-fully-thought-out script, as this film could have been truly exceptional. It however was not. Anyway, if you've got this far, thanks for reading.

This was the slowest, worst acted and silliest film imaginable. Do not be deceived by the cast list as I was - sometimes things just don't work out! I would truly have preferred to watch paint dry. Its listing as a comedy is bemusing and it is certainly no thriller. What were they thinking?! Don't waste your time.

This is an ok film with some poor acting and a silly story. If you have something better to do then do it.

Not bad but a little slow and a stretch for keanu as he played 2 characters one of which was an actor?? He gets no better with age. But Vera Faramiga was great as always as was Caan.

Having watched the trailer I thought this looked quite funny! Boy was I wrong........ Keanu Reeves was just terrible, I know he is not the most amazing actor but he was so wooden and so boring I really didn't care what happened. The story was beyond silly and I ended up fast forwarding it just to see what happened, sort of wish I hadn't bothered!! Avoid this at all costs........

It's a nice idea.  A bunch of misfits plan a bank robbery as a production of The Cherry Orchard is being prepared in the background.  What unites the two is the relationship of the leading actress (the woman from In The Air) and the mastermind behind the crime (Keanu Reeves) who first meet when she knocks him down on the road outside the bank.

The misfits bit works well, especially the failed conman (James Cann) who consoles himself with the thought that even if they get caught, he quite likes jail and the guy who should have served time innstead of Keanu, fresh from a failed Ponzi scheme based on Korean tupperware.  What doesn't work so well is the counterpoint between the relationship between the two lead chacters in the film and the two characters in The Cherry Orchard; after all who the heck understands what the Cherry Orchard is about based on a two sentence explanation?.

The real problem though is that the relationship, central to the whole film, between Reeves and Whatshername is just too weak to drive this film anywhere, not helped at all that Keanu seems to have trouble distinguishing his character from Klaatu the alien since he plays them both the same way.

Overall a miss, but on the strength of the nice idea, not a complete disaster,  OK to watch if you have something to do or read at the same time.
