Director Philip Kaufman followed up The Unbearable Lightness of Being with this intellectually erotic depiction of the bizarre relationship between author Henry Miller (Fred Ward), his wife June (Uma Thurman) and the writer Anaïs Nin (Maria de Medeiros). Based on Nin's diaries, it's a rather slow and stilted film whose main interest now lies in its cast, which, as well as a young Thurman, includes Richard E Grant as Nin's bland husband and Kevin Spacey as Henry's friend. Nowhere near as sexy as the original publicity led viewers to believe (it was one of the first films to get a NC-17 rating in the US), it became notorious more for its subject matter (which includes an affair between June and Nin) than for what actually appears on screen.

Set amidst the lush, smoky atmosphere of 1930's bohemian Paris, this movie follows the young Anaïs Nin as she explores her own sexuality. She is seduced by a fascination with the volatile tension and tempestuous relationship between fellow writer Henry Miller and his elegant and mysterious wife June. This fascination leads her to examine the sterility of her own marriage as she embarks on an affair that tests her own limits and ultimately adds spice and passion to the stilted love between herself and her husband.
Complex dialogue, subtle, skilled acting, superb costume design and attention to the period offer a treat for the intellect. However, soft porn it is not - the sexual tension is more implied than graphically portrayed, though in a way that in no way lessens the movies eroticism.
Pretty good, the storyline is basically about a wife bored with life in general but with a sex obssession., and particularily for men and women introduced via her husband. I rented because Kevin Spacey appears but only on the odd occasion. Worth renting for the good acting and Uma Thurman!
