Wasted opportunity

Superficial and dumbed-down account of the life of Henri IV
(did we really need a 'guest appearance' by Nostradamus?) reputedly France's most popular king - strange, then, that this is largely a German production with a predominantly German cast.
Unfortunately, the film compares unfavourably with the superb 'La Reine Margot' which covers some of the same period and portrays the events of the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre much more dramatically (and bloodily).

Don't get taken in by the fancy cover art
By fifthsunset (3 reviews) , 19 Nov 2012This film has all the charm and expertise of a low budget porn film, and about the same amount of gratuitous sex scenes as well.
Perhaps Henry IV had an interesting life. I promise it is not depicted here. It lurches from one scene to another with absolutely no regard for pace. The scenes might as well have been laid down in a random order for all the sense they made. The dialogue is rambling and false. The acting is the amongst the worse I've ever seen. That includes the porn films I mentioned above. I genuinely winced at a couple of points.
I'll let more qualified people speak about the historical accuracy it, but by all accounts this aspect is as shabby as the others.
The result of all this was that at 1 hour 30 minutes in I did not care about anyone in the film or what would happen next. It went on for another soul destroying 50 minutes. I only stuck it out so I could write this review. Reader, please let some good come from my lost 2 hours and 50 minutes. Do not watch this film. It has neither the court politics or the epic warfare it wants you to think it does.- Was this review helpful to you?

Utterly Enthralling

Its got the lot. Murder, sex, intrigue, religion. All the favourite dinner party conversational no no's.

Not bad

Gore Bore
By Seedyvee (187 reviews) from Grantham , 11 Jul 2012This production was too ingratiating to popular taste with its pantomimic portrayal of the royal court, the obligatory periodic scenes of sex, gore and hysteria, and the pretentiously apocalyptic soundtrack that was all too often anachronistically clashing with the historical subject. Overblown acting save for the strangely uncharismatic performance of Henry himself who emanated no sense of royal gravitas or chivalric qualities whatsoever.
The portrayal of minor characters were more satisfying but this could not save a rather disappointing feature film that had little credibility.- Was this review helpful to you?
