This is more of a warning than a review. I've watched many of the serial killer biographical movies (Bundy, Gein, Dahmer etc) but this is the worst, for a few reasons:

The movie starts with a message informing viewers that some of the story is infact just that, a story. One of the main characters in this movie is completely fictional. If that was my interest, I'd go watch Pulp Fiction or something.

I don't know Henry's story, maybe most or all of the events were true. Maybe the complete disregard for humanity is accurate, and maybe the style of rape and murder is in following with Henry's style. In any case, one rape scene near the middle of the film was so bad, I had to stop watching. The closest comparison I can make is 8MM (starring Nicolas Cage) where the snuff porn clips aren't even close to the indeceny in this.

I'm not saying don't watch it, but if you didn't like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre or have had traumatic sexual experiences, its definitely one to avoid.

  • Brilliant and Disturbing

There are no 'experts' in this film explaining the serial killer.... no policeman on his trail, no doctor or psychologist.... instead there are three damaged people and two small rooms and the brutal reality of violent murder. One reason this film is disturbing is that we are not offered the usual gloss on murder found in the detective genres but rather murder is shown for what it is - unpleasant, meaningless and cruel.

Brilliant. Fantastic cinematography, captured the innocence of American Society at the time of Henry's crimes, while still giving the film a darkness of the under belly of America. As I said.. Brilliant.

A poor effort. I realize this was released in '86, but that's no excuse. There are much better serial killer movies out there, Ed Gein, Silence of the Lambs and Ted Bundy, to name but a few, which were made not long after this. Also Hitchcock's Psycho, which pre-dates this by decades, is in a different league. The dynamic between Henry & Otis is interesting though. Worth watching if you're interested in serial killers, just don't expect anything special.

I’ll admit that I knew very little about this movie going in. For some reason I always assumed it was a 90s Brit flick with a bad reputation. Because of the the name “Henry”, perhaps? Obviously I was very wrong,

This is America back in 1986. And this is pretty much a groundbreaking movie.

Of course it’s a little rough around the edges, and the score is very dated. But the themes and set pieces are still very relevant, and more than a little disturbing.

This is one film were a remake wouldn’t be all that bad, if it hadn’t been copied so many times already.

  • Utterly Bleak

This film is perhaps the most devestating I have ever watched. Absolutely bleak in it's portrayal of Henry Lee Lucas who killed at least 11 people (numbers vary hideously to perhaps 60 or above), it is perhaps at least truthful to see the grim, empty lifeless serial killer realistically. I can't rate it because I don't know what to say but if you want the blood, guts and bare bones of the worst of life, then you may want to watch this.
