  • Poor Woo-full Effort

    [Highly rated reviewer]

John Woo's war film is extremely violent and brutal with some truely unpleasant images thrown in your face. Very little of the visual Woo style gets past the ugliness of the violence. It also has a rediculously stupid sex scene that serves no purpose whatsoever. The few attempts at light comedy during the film feel woefully mis-placed. This is the first John Woo film that I can honestly say I was not overly impressed with. Character developement does not exist at all, so you feel nothing for the brothers in arms as they fall. A small child being in the middle of all the carnage is a little disturbing too. Even Lam Ching Ying as the 'evil' enemy Officer hunting down the heroes fails to bring anything memorable to the story. If you want loads of gunplay, explosions and people impaled on things with no real story, well this is for you. Otherwise I would go for 'The Killer', 'A Better Tomorrow' or even Woo's far better war film 'A Bullet In The Head'. This was made before 'A Better Tomorrow' but did not get release until after that film was a hit. I can see why.

Heroes Shed No Tears is set in Cambodia. A group of mercenaries are hired to go on a mission to destroy the Golden Triangle, an international drug cartel, and capture its leader. And the mission starts off smooth sailing, but inevitably the mission goes wrong, and the men are running for their lives...

I gave this three stars because I thought this wasn't Woo's best film. This was definitely a good early attempt. By the time he had got to The Killer, and his work since, it's all been great. I still think his best Chinese film is a tie between The Killer and Hard Boiled.

This film had fun action, and had some insane battle sequences. But I feel that it doesn't have that emotional heart that Woo is able to incorporate into his later films through having a good story and good character development. I didn't hate this film, but I don't necessarily love it either. If you're curious, check this out.
