The best psychological thriller in a long while...a genuine scarefest
Highly compelling and utterly creepy
Top notch chills. Be afraid.
This film was fantastic, Dakota Fanning was excellent, she is very convincing. Robert Deniro plays another great role.
Hide and Seek starts off a little slow but has a great build to establish the characters well. Then things start to get chilling. There are some great moments that make all your hairs stand on end. If you like films to watch in the dark with an easily scared woman. This is the one ;-)
First of all, be warned, the review below from 'Mrs A of London' rather selfishly gives away the twist in this movie. Don't you just hate people who do that? Don't read it before watching this film - I did, and it ruined the experience somewhat. I think I would have probably given the film 4 stars if I hadn't known the ending before it began. As far as the movie is concerned, its a genuinely good thriller - granted its nothing unique, but its a good idea and its well played out. De Niro is great as usual, although the script isn't exactly taxing for him, but the real star of the show is the little girl. She's a great little actress that we'll probably see a lot more of. Overall its a worthwhile watch if you like tension building thrillers such as The Hand That Rocks The Cradle. Good Saturday Night stuff. My only criticism is that the DVD offer 4 alternate endings to replace the final 30 seconds of the film - but in my opinion, the film was over by then anyway, there wasn't even any need for the original final 30 seconds. It just strikes me as 'typically hollywood' where film-makers insist on tying everything off neatly. Apart from that, an enjoyable 90 minutes. 3 stars.
I thought this film was to negative beyond belief . I mean there was just not one redeeming thing about it. I know its not real life! but no child is this unlucky! However it seems the writer wanted us to find some reality in it, somehow! The plot is so downcast and dark, it left me feeling, 'there's a rope outside and I should use it '. I mean De,niro is his usual brilliant self, but Heaven knows why he involved himself in this one? I write myself ,and i think well, but i could'nt write anything so cruel and desperate as this, it's a real downer! Take my advice don't see it, it will leave you feeling so, so in the pits!
This film was okay to watch but nothing like i was expecting. Quite disappointing on the whole and i wouldnt recommend to rent - wait for it to come on TV!
Although it had the potential - and acting talent - to make a very worthy film, Hide and Seek falls down on suspension of disbelief. Not only does Robert De Niro fail to convince us as a child psychologist after years in harder roles, the twist, and implications for the story that has developed, is utterly absurd. And with 4 alternate endings on the DVD, it's clear that the filmmakers had little idea of what they were setting out to achieve.
Dull, not particularly scary, and a waste of the acting talents involved.

How the mighty have fallen!! In the past De Niro would never have appeared in this type of film. Nevertheless it isn't that bad, although a bit ponderous in the early stages. The real star is the tortured daughter (Dakota Fanning) who should be Oscar material for this part.
The story is not original, father and daughter starting afresh after the suicide of Mum plus creepy neighbours, unfriendly sheriff, shifty estate agent and the daughters invisble (or is he) friend.
I liked the very end which suggests the story could have more mileage.
This is a great movie with a great twist its got you gripped to the end.The acting is great well worth renting.I seen it at the movies and its one of the best films i have seen in a long time . rent it !
Well normally I can see them coming a mile of but this film kept you wondering until it was nearly over but it was worth the wait. If you haven't seen this before rent it now and even if you have, the second time round you can pick up on lots of little hints that you may not have noticed first time round, well worth a watch!
Well - what can i say - i got this film after seeing a clip of it some time ago, and must say, this is one of the best films i have seen for a long time, with an excellent twist at the end. If your looking for a film to sit and watch with a partner, nothing too heavy then this is the one for you - Top film !!
I am at a loss to explain why this film has been awarded 5 stars by so many reviewers. This is a slow paced, tedious affair with very little to keep an audience captivated. The performances are OK; Dakota Fanning plays another wide eyed confused/alienated child, and DeNiro the concerned father desperate to find a way of communicating with his traumatised daughter after the suicide of her mother. The film fails to build any kind of tension or foreboding atmosphere, leaving the audience with very little cause to be even remotely anxious. The ending is perhaps the biggest problem, seemingly crow-barred in at the last minute, it simply defies any reasonable explanation and ultimately just doesn't work on any level. If you are expecting an 'edge of your seat' intelligent psychological thriller, look elsewhere as this will have you looking for the Horlicks in no time. DVD contains 4 alternate endings, commentary from the director and co, 14 deleted scenes and a 'Making Of' featurette.
As far as I am concerned anything with Robert Deniro in has got to be worth watching and this is no exeption. A spooky tale, of Deniro and his daughter mooving to the country from New York after the death of Deniro's wife, then his daughter seems to have an imaginary friend, Charly, but Charly is an evil friend that does some shocking things, make sure you watch this Surround, as I did, some of the musical sound effects make you check you have locked all the doors of your house. A Chilling Thriller with a twist at the end that you may see coming but even so well worth watching the journey there. Great to rate a film 5 stars again.
If you like films that keep you interested throughout, then 'Hide and Seek' doesn't do a bad job of achieving this.
The film is well made and manages for the most part to stay way from the cheap shock tactics, while at the same sustains a reasonably tense atmosphere, at least until the last couple of scenes.
Personally Im a sucker for movies set in rural New York, New England etc, I just like the environment. Dakota Fanning is excellent as usual, and is seriously creepy in parts.
It won't make it onto anyone's top 100 list or anything, but it's not bad.
