  • Good adaptation..........good soundtrack

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Having read the book a while ago, I was interested to see what the hollywood adaptation would be like. Well in my opinion it works. Cusak and the other screenwriters/producers have clearly given a lot of thought to their adaptation, and with such fine base material, they cold hardly fail. Jack Black is very entertaining. Overall thoroughly recommended.

    Top five films about music...........

I'm not a purist - although this is relocated to the States it works. Cusack isn't detestable... he's just not likable either. I know, you're not supposed to necessarily like the main character, but you are supposed to care. This film made me not care, which is a shame as the book didn't have that effect. If I had to use a word to describe this film, it'd be 'meh'. Oh, Jack Black steals the show with his morning mixtape scene and does a great version of 'Let's Get It On' but you can see those on Youtube and rent a different film, which is less of a waste of your life...

  • A film about monkey pain

    Rated - 4.0 stars
    By Platospupil (195 reviews) , 18 Mar 2012
Years ago, a Head Teacher friend of mine told me about male monkeys. Apparently, long after the young females of the kind have started collecting fruit and making nests, the young males are still up in the tree tops, throwing sticks at each other and shrieking.

This film is about the male monkeys. It is a truth universally held that males grow up in a slow and monkey way. This = an uncomfortable way to grow up .. but maybe we do it to make up for a lack of periods or other forms of female pain.

This movie catches the male pain, the growth and the universal truth. Bravo.

  • True to the spirit of the book

    Rated - 4.0 stars

When I first saw this film (as a fan of the book), I remember being disappointed that it was set in the US. To be honest, I think this disappointment coloured my opinion a bit too much because, watching it again after several years, it's really a very good film. The performances are great (interesting to see Jack Black playing a slightly earlier rendition of the part that he plays in School of Rock), the script is funny, and the whole film remains very true to the original book in spirit.

If you appreciate music, and a love of music, watch this film. It's probably number 3 on the top 5 list of films that are worth watching if you appreciate music :-)

One of my favourite movies ever:- Having read Hornby's novel not only does this movie represent it well but successfully puts it's own spin on it. The acting is classic..very entertaining! The soundtrack is also perfect!
