HIGH LANE (Vertige, 2009)

If you don't like heights, you're going to be chewing your fingernails down to the bone on several occasions during this high-flying horrorfest, in which a group of young mountain climbers come a-cropper during a 'restful' trip to Eastern Europe. Tensions within the group lead to all manner of troubles, not helped by a monstrous psychopath who targets them with an arsenal of deadly weapons...

Yes, it's in French and yes, you'll have to read subtitles, but the characters are well-drawn and the suspense set-pieces are truly breathtaking (particularly an early sequence when some of the climbers get into difficulties - I'll say no more! - and the only person who can help them is, shall we say, 'indisposed'). A couple of neat twists round out the package, and the widescreen scenery - shot in the French Alps - is a wonder to behold. Horror fans need no further encouragement to check it out.

Aspect ratio: 2.39:1 (Super 35)
