my daughter Bethany loves this dvd, and could not stop watching it. so much so, we bought it for her for her birthday.

it has a touch of the 'Grease' storyline to it, but more modern day.

The story follows two teenagers, Zac Efron as Troy Bolton, the captain of the basketball team and Vanessa Hudgens as Gabriella Montez, the maths genius.

They are picked at random from the crowd, attending a teen party at a ski lodge to sing a karaoke song. To their surprise, they actually sound great together and the sparks begin to fly.

Returning from vacation, Gabriella is starting at a new school. She's hoping to shed her geeky girl image. On her first day, she runs into Troy, who is the captain of the basketball team at her new school. He is busy getting ready for the upcoming playoffs against their rival school.

In the back of their minds, is the magic that happened when they sang together.

The sign ups for the school's winter musical have been posted, and both of them are tempted to sign up.

Of course, that means Troy would have to face his friends, who think he should be focusing all of his time on basketball.

And Gabriella would have to deal with Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) who, along with her brother Ryan (Lucas Grabeel), are always the stars of the school musicals, and also, Gabriella is being recruited to compete in the Scholastic Decathlon, by her best friend Taylor.

When Troy and Gabriella audition for the School Musical and get a callback, vain and self-centred drama queen Sharpay Evans and her brother Ryan instantly start scheming to throw them off the trail.

Meanwhile, Taylor and Troy's best friend Chad are doing scheming of their own, as the singing is getting in the way of Troy's basketball game, and Gabriella's decathalon, and neither of the teams are happy with their lack of concentration in basketball or maths.

The music is upbeat and inspiring, stretching from hip-hop ('Get Your Head In The Game') to salsa ('Bop To The Top').

the question is will both Troy and Gabriella give up their cliqued images of the jock and the nerd stereotypes, to start something new, or will they do as the show's first big anthem urges and 'Stick to the Status Quo'?

    watch it, to find out.

My brother has watched this about 30 times. He is 24. He believes he is a voice of a generation. Even though he is a quarter of a century.

  • Not Really For An Adult Audience

I rented this film because a friend of mine had never seen it and she is a huge Disney fan so I thought she would love it. I'd seen it years ago when it was first released and remembered loving it - even though I'm well out of the target age group. However, the film wasn't as good as I remembered it - very cheesy and lots of cringe-worthy lines and situations. However, I understand this is a kid's film. It isn't really geared towards adults like several other Disney films. I won't lie though, Zac Efron is pretty good looking - except for those eye brows.

An alternative to Greece for the much younger viewer. Makes me feel very old. Lots of really beautiful people. Teenagers would probably find this movie slightly childish. Really catchy tunes. My daughter saw it several times over consecutive days!

Not a bad film all in all, if you like a film where people like to burst into song, all you Glee fans, watch this space.
