A ghost-busting cross between Fawlty Towers and Blithe Spirit, Neil Jordan's boil-in-the-bag Beetle Juice goes for Ealing whimsy and easy laughs and, incredibly, manages both in spite of such a slender plot. Peter O'Toole hits the right note of craziness as a haunted castle owner whose staff of fake spectres battle real poltergeists during the American tourist season, with suitably madcap results. However, too many desperate characters veer off into so many disparate subplots that complete Carry On Screaming-style satisfaction is never achieved.

This film is a gem. Peter O'Toole plays Peter Plunkett, the owner of Plunkett Castle in Ireland. They are about to receive a visit from a group of American tourists and must convince them that the castle is haunted or tourism will drop off and they will be forced to sell. The trouble is, they are lying (or so they think!!) and do their best to bluff their way through. O'Toole is brilliant as usual, good performances also by Daryl Hannah, Steve Guttenburg and Liam Neeson.
Classic film that's finally been released on DVD :) Absolutely brilliant acting and script, well worth watching!
