This fourth instalment in the variable series is a mass of chaotic action searching for a plot among the remnants of badly directed (by Douglas Aarniokoski) pop promos. Christopher Lambert's Connor MacLeod character joins forces with Adrian Paul's Duncan MacLeod from the TV series to fight remorseless killer Bruce Payne for the ultimate immortal prize. Jerkily whizzing between centuries and countries for maximum audience bewilderment, this cobbled together farrago is a complete write-off with Lambert on auto-pilot, Paul consistently losing his battle with the dumb dialogue and former fashion model/singer Lisa Barbuscia in a permanent state of catwalk catatonia.
"...A guilty pleasure....The filmmakers have gone out of their way to stock ENDGAME with familiar faces and stylistic touches from the first film..."
As a committed Highlander fan - even traipsing round the Highlands of Scotland on the banks of Loch Shiel and Glenfinnan (where, by the way - it was NOT filmed!) I despised Highlander two and three, and was delighted when End Game came out. I think it was a Highlander fan tribute, rather than a money spinner, and the film and video receipts reflected this!
It would have been nice to have seen a cameo from the lovely Sean Connery, but I suppose he has aged too much for us to believe he is a non ageing immortal - although, Christophe Lammiebear has gained a few years and a few pounds. But hey, if ANGEL, can do it as a vampire, why not CL? Lol!
I cried buckets when Duncan and Connor had a showdown but nothing is forgotten, nothing is ever forgotten!
FROM THE DAWN OF TIME WE CAME.
I'd read that this was the best Highlander film of the series - but I have to disagree. The plot is confused, the continuity doubtful, special effects mundane and the storyline confusing (apart from that, it's OK!).
For my money, the original Highlander film is still the best. Innovative storyline, great photography and an unforgettable version of "New York, New York" by Queen.
If you're seriously into sword fighting then rent this film - cos that's about all it has to offer!
