I really enjoyed this series, it gave you a good insight into area, culture of people, fantastic scenes.
Palins travels are pure entertainment - he brings escapism to the small screen and allows you to sit back and be there.
I've enjoyed all his travel series but I now have a mild reservation about the direction in which his travel programmes are going.
His original travels appealed to a broad audience because of the element of suspense his wanderings contained eg travelling around the world in 80 days, the prospect of missing flights, boats, trains etc.
Now, his travels seem to be more educational than adventure, which is a shame because the common tension shared amongst all his other outings just isn't there in Hamalaya.
Why rush? He's just travelling around at his own pace looking at things.
Hasn't Judith Chalmers covered this angle?
We need to feel enthused again! A journey round the Med on Camel or a round the world scooter race perhaps? Anything, but Palin needs to inject a bit more tension into his next effort.
If you're a Palin fan you'll enjoy (not love) Himalaya, but if you're not then watch Around the World in 80 days first.
