I never saw this series when it was originally broadcast so I was quite pleased when it came out on DVD. The cast includes many now famous British comedy actors and was scripted by part of the Father Ted team. Unfortunately it isn't particularly funny and some of the usual sharp witted humour associated with Simon Pegg and Co is sadly missing and replaced with run of the mill slapstick humour normally associated with forgetful comedy series. It does have it's comedy moments but in general it didn't really hold my attention. You would have to assume the reason why this had a belated DVD release is because it wasn't originally very well received and is now trying to make money out of the fame of Simon Pegg. Disappointing.- Was this review helpful to you?

(3)Laughs From The Past
By Huggers (8 reviews) from Barry , 14 Mar 2011This faux nostalgic sit-com that focuses on a group of would be suburban anarchists in the 1960's flew below the radar somewhat when it broadcast. Perhaps overshadowed by it's creators previous masterpiece 'Father Ted' it never really got the recognition it deserved.
Bearing all of the hallmarks of the aforementioned predecessor, Hippies masquerades as a conventional sitcom, perhaps because of it's deliberately dated sets and wardrobe but is more of an absurdist masterpiece.
It explores the skewed ideology of the sixties without becoming bookish and it's beautifully written characters, excellently portrayed by Philips, Pegg and co, draw you into this half imagined era with easy grace.
The laughs are thick and fast, the writing impeccable and the plot lines bloody inspired. If you liked Ted watch this. It's beautiful, man.- Was this review helpful to you?
