Fizzing with Life
By Leland (1 review) , 02 Nov 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
Compelled to write this due to the one star reviews. I suppose everybody has a right to an opinion but....This is quite simply one of the best films ever made. I laugh more each time I see it this time - 'it comes naturally, his grandfather was a snake' - each line zings with life. The performances are fizzing with a kind of energy that leaves the viewer breathless with admiration. And if you can't feel the real feeling underneath the surface well you are made of stone - those little lingering close ups on Rosalind Russell as her doubts mount, the moments, the very few moments but so telling when Cary Grant is lost for words. Yes the direction, in terms of camerawork is unobtrusive, but that is because Hawks wants to let the work, the story, the characters sing. And then there is the satire on government and authority. But most of all there is the longing that this film fills me with - the sweet longing to be in that world (though it never existed) where people are so smart, so witty and blessed with a cynicism that shines and adds lustre, that doesn't burnish. I feel like I could watch this every week of my life and never tire of the excitement that one of Russell's glances offers. Art and life does not come more intense, or compressed then this.- Was this review helpful to you?

(36)Good but I might now have lung cancer!!
By a customer , 29 Mar 2013Fast paced comedy with some good moments. A bit dated and typical of the era and it's clearly adapted from a play taking place in only a few locations. But don't be put off, it's short enough to be enjoyable and worth a watch. P. S. As the title of this review suggests they smoke A LOT in it!!- Was this review helpful to you?

An all-time Great!
By a customer , 25 Mar 2013This is by far one of my favourite films in existence without a doubt. The entire work as a whole just gleams with timeless lustre, from the magically whimsical performances to the glorious fast-talking portrayals of the brilliantly clever script and characters. I could honestly never tire of watching this masterpiece. There are very few films in existence that make me as happy as His Girl Friday does every time I watch it, and there are very few actors who have generated as much joy in my being as Russell and Grant did in this all-time Great.- Was this review helpful to you?

Disappointing and dated
By Abby88 (167 reviews) from Bognor Regis , 27 Oct 2012I don't know why this film is still popular. The dialogue sounds so scripted, the characters are unlikable and the story just isn't interesting.- Was this review helpful to you?

True classic
By a customer , 07 Jan 2012Incredibly funny movie that is gripping from start to finish, a very tight script, excellent dialogues and the best of it all -- long uncut scenes bringing out top quality acting. Hard to imagine how much acting preparation would have gone into each of those long scenes with dialogues at such a frantic pace.
In my opinion, a comedy is much more difficult to pull off than anything else and five stars for having done that here. Not to mention, this movie does not feel from another era at all so a true classic.
This is surely one of the best movies i have seen.- Was this review helpful to you?
