clumsy, but has worthwhile moments
By Andrew Otty from Devon, UK , 09 Aug 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
This TV drama begins badly, with a very cack-handed telling of Hitler's early life. We are given several short glimpses of events, such as his being beaten as a child, which are presumably there for a reason but are given no development. I will not do the director's work for him, and draw the conclusion that because Hitler was beaten as a child he became who he did. That is lazy storytelling. Once the story reaches Hitler's gradual takeover of the Nazi party, it certainly picks up. Robert Carlyle is excellent, and there are a few other good performances - notably from Jena Malone as his neice (though this character needed a bit more development), and Liev Schreiber as one of Hitler's early sponsors. There are equally some pitiful performances; Matthew Modine as the annoying American, sorry I mean German, journalist, and Zoe Telford as Eva Braun, who is unable to pronounce her own character's name (at least, not consistently with those who address her). To be fair, the Eva Braun story arc is introduced and then quickly abandoned by the film makers. There are definitely aspects of this production that are worthwhile - I liked the parallels between Hitler's path to dictatorship and our own current political situation, however if you only want to watch one Hitler film, wait for the DVD release of 'Der Untergang'.- Was this review helpful to you?

(46)Not as good as DownFall
By ReviewerReviewer (90 reviews) , 04 Jun 2013Does not match the film Downfall, it has its moments and its worth watching. I think its the quality of acting that lets this film down.- Was this review helpful to you?

Good brave and rare dramatisation of rise of Hitler
By Bobsview (559 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 02 Apr 2013Good dramatization of rise of Hitler over 20 years before WW2. Robert Carlyle (The Full Monty) is pretty good as the young Hitler. There are so few dramas about the rise of Hitler and the Nazis that you cannot be too choosy and for that reason you cannot ignore this one if you are interested in such things. Yes there are many films about the Second WW itself but very very few that attempt to portray the build up and rise to power of Hitler and the Nazis in Germany.- Was this review helpful to you?

Unique portrayal of Hitler.
By MidnightMovie (69 reviews) from Kirkcaldy , 09 Jan 2011I think this was an excellent piece of acting from Robert Carlyle as Hitler. All of the other movies I've watched about Hitler make him look like a distant, ranting, screaming, stuffed museum piece, but this film makes him real. This is a human - like your brother or someone you work with. You see his psychopathic compulsion desperate to realise itself. He loathes the Jews, he hates them and he will find a way to have ultimate power over them or he will die in the attempt. I think the film could have gone deeper in a lot of areas, (I was fascinated for instance by his odd relationship with his niece), and I think there was plenty time in a three hour movie to do this, but it's definately worth a watch.

Very good
By a customer from london , 24 Dec 2010This is a very accurate picture of the RISE of Hitler to the power. three hours long but never boring and very interesting. Robert Carlyle gives a good perfomance altough he makes look hitler as a clown (phisically).- Was this review helpful to you?

interesting topic but a bit poor
By AlexAuldsmith (3 reviews) from Edinburgh, Scotland , 06 Feb 2010I liked finding out about hitler so the subject matter was intriguing but it all seemed a bit dry. I am usually a fan of Robert Carlyle and figured who would do a good foaming at the mouth angry hitler but once again he managed to make a bad choice and the movie resembles a slightly deflated football.. not to be too harsh ... despite good budget, production values, cast, locations and pretty much everything this film ended up lacking. His neice is amazingly charming and a scene including her and hitler in a corn field is probably the most enjoyable scene of the whole thing. If your interested in the subject matter then there is no reason not to see this but if your wanting a close intimate portrait of hitler or a valkyrie style thriller this may not do it for you. .. cant really say much to fault it ... just didnt excite me much (even tho I watched it all.- Was this review helpful to you?
