...weird and wonderful
this is a wonderful adaptation of the story by terry pratchett.
It is Hogswatch which is the equivalent of Christmas on Discworld, and the Hogfather has gone missing, so Death take his place along with albert his trusty servant as an elf, who drinks all the sherry and eats all of the mince pies. while this is happening Death's estranged governess granddaughter Susan, who is trying to lead a normal life attempts to find out what has happened to the hogfather, and the tooth fairy who has also gone missing.
david jason is fantastic as albert. this film is well worth renting out.
To be honest, I pretty much stayed away from this one due to the fact that I was rather dubious about how a live action Discworld adaption would work without a huge Hollywood-esque budget. I needn't have worried much on that account, for a tv film, the production values are decent and not squirm inducing by any means.
The script and dialogue are pretty tight for the most part, although there are a couple of scenes which were unnecessary and seemed to be thrown in there to pad things out a bit.
The performances were varied, fortunately, the big three: Jason, Richardson, and Dockery, do a bang up job and handled their roles brilliantly. Marc Warren, on the other hand, was far too reminiscent of Depp's Wonka and it tended to grate a bit. Robinson was hamming it up a little too much as well.
It's possible that The Hogfather did stay a liitle too faithful to the book and some in-jokes, as well as references may fly over the head of someone who is unfamiliar with the Discworld novels. However, there is still plenty of enjoyment to be had out of this adaptation.
Over all, I'd recommend it.
