The American West is brought to the screen in vivid purple and blue animation in Disney's barnyard adventure HOME ON THE RANGE. With geometric patches representing a vast expanse of farmland, and landscapes ranging from rocky desert to lush green pastures, this classic cartoon--no Pixar influence here--is visually pleasing in .. Disney has made some of the greatest animated features of all time, however this latest musical comedy certainly isn't among them. With computer-generated cartoons continuing to steal the studio's thunder, it seems like financial suicide to offer today's demanding youngsters a retro-style, hand-drawn, action-light tale — especially one that could have been told in a quarter of the time. Despite the impressive voice talent (including Randy Quaid, Judi Dench, Jennifer Tilly and Steve Buscemi), the Wild West-set story of a trio of cows who try to save their farm from repossession is too weak and uninspiring to really charm. While the animals are sufficiently cute to look at, they need more depth and definition, particularly given the flimsy plotline and crudely rendered landscapes. The film has its occasional moments, including a psychedelic-styled yodelling sequence, but ultimately this is a pedestrian affair.

Pleasant spoof of Westerns in an animated movie that is closer in style to old Warner Brothers' cartoons than the usual Disney approach.

    superb.........

this film is superb. my children loved it. The story comprises of a thief named Alameda Slim, who is wanted in many states for stealing herds of cattle.

The farmers go broke after losing all their animals, and reluctantly auction their farms for sale.

Molly a cow, who has lost her home due to this situation, is now brought to a new one known as `Patch of Heaven'.

However, things start to go downhill, when Pearl, the owner of the farm, has to put it up for auction as well, since she cannot seem to pay the bills for keeping it.

Therefore, Molly, along with two other cows named Mrs.Calloway (voiced by Dame Judi Dench) and Grace (voice by Jennifer Tilly), decide to find some way to obtain the money needed to keep their farm open, by catching Alameda Slim and acquiring the reward money.

there are many obstacles in their way, which they have to face.

This film has a great selection of the casting for the voices, such as Cuba Gooding Jr. (giving the voice for the very funny horse named Buck), Roseanne, Judi Dench, Randy Quaid (providing the voice for the villain Alameda Slim) and Jennifer Tilly.

this film is well worth renting out.

    A pure Joy!

This is quite possibly one of the funniest animated films i have seen. Roseanne, Judi Dench and Jennifer Tilly give amazing performances. Great characters, superb animation. The backgrounds and the design of the characters is purely and simply beautiful. This is also the last traditionally animated film Disney are going to make, from now on it will all be CGI, which is such a shame.

    From the Horse's Mouth

Not one of Disney's best by any means. Storyline, nor animation, nor soundtrack is particularly striking.

However, not feeling suitably qualified to rate this fairly myself I referred the matter to my learned son. The conversation went something like this:-

    Q. What did you think?

    A. It was real good

    Q. Was it funny?

    A. Yes

    Q. Would you watch it again?

    A. Yes

    Q. Out of 7, what would you give it?

    A. 6

    Q. You loved it?

    A. Yes

So, there you go, 6 out of 7 from Sam, aged 5. Disney know their target audience.

    A big disappointment

After all the Disney films I have seen this was a big disappointment. All other Disney films seem to have been created for adults and children.

However, this one would only appeal to children.

    Nothing special

My son was not impressed; started playing with his toys half way through ... you can't really compare this with the other Disney Greats.

    2 stars on the kidometer

When my children are not transfixed in the cinema then the movie is less than it should be. Was hoping this would be great....but really the cattle prod should be used on the makers.....It's too slow which leads to boredom and kids getting restless and parents getting stressed. Be MORE next time walt.

    Disappointing

I would only recommend this film to anybody who is desperate for a cartoon film. I thought that this film was going to be as funny as toy story but i was mistaken.

    Traditional Disney animation on autopilot

The kids enjoyed this by-the-numbers feature but even they agreed it was not one of Disney's best. The animation itself was first-class but perhaps the amazing sights and sounds of CGI have ruined us for traditional cel-drawn animation. The heart of any film, though, is the plot and characters of course. Here, they can only be described as hackneyed. If you're looking for an alternative, we all thoroughly enjoyed 'The Iron Giant.' It was much more entertaining. Plus there were no awkward musical numbers that brought the story to a grinding halt as in this film.

    So long Cartoons.........

Todays children expect more than this film can offer. The limitations of cell drawn cartoons now looking way past their sell by date. Although colourful and cheery, this films lacks the ability to be able to relate to the characters, in the way that modern childrens cgi films do. Overall an okay film to watch, but nothing to make the kids watch it again and again and again, as they often do.
