A great film from a great book by Louis L'Amour. The Duke is on familiar ground with dialogue tailored to his persona. Some of the John Ford stock company make an appearance, Ward Bond & Paul Fix and James Arness before he became TV's Marshall Dillon in Gunsmoke. Michael Pate that fine Australian actor appears in his first Indian role as Geronimo, this movie began for him a career playing Indians and no I'm not going to call them native Americans! Leo Gordon and Rudolfo Acosta play their customary bad guy roles. Newcomer to a leading Hollywood, role fresh from the Broadway stage, Geraldine Page is adequate, but there is not the chemistry with Wayne that is apparent with most of his other leading ladies. Director John Farrow had to skip out to go back to Hollywood to begin another film so John Ford stepped in to finish the picture.
A nice western ( even my wife enjoyed it )
