Honey

With a plethora of flashy cameos by artists Missy Elliot, Tweet, Ginuwine, Jadakiss, and Sheek, HONEY feels like an extended hip-hop video with an inspiring, socially conscious message about ambition and the bittersweet taste of success.
New York City dancer-choreographer Honey Daniels (Jessica Alba, of TV's DARK ANGEL) hopes her talent will soon be recognized, but for now she's working three odd jobs: in a record store, as dance teacher at the local youth centre, and bartender in a Manhattan dance club. Hot director of music videos Michael Ellis (David Moscow, JUST MARRIED, BIG) spots an amateur video of Honey cutting a rug after work, and gives her a shot at the big time when he asks her to choreograph videos for Ginuwine and Tweet. Just as the big bucks start rolling in, Honey gets a nasty dose of reality when she rebuffs the director's sexual advances and is blackballed by the industry. Honey throws herself back into her community work with a vengeance and helps two of her most talented students Benny (Lil' Romeo) and Raymond (Zachary Isaiah Williams) stay out of the hands of local drug dealers. HONEY is a 21st-century version of FLASHDANCE or FAME--an infinitely entertaining urban dance movie that gets viewers' feet tapping with high-energy choreography and strings of catchy, cutting-edge tunes.

Jessica Alba, who made her name as the star of TV's Dark Angel, struggles to “keep it real” in this spirited urban drama. The debut feature of music video director Bille Woodruff, it's like a hip-hop/R&B version of Flashdance, complete with acres of flesh and titillating dance routines. Alba is the eponymous Honey, an aspiring choreographer who's given a big break by a sleazy white video director, only to realise that her heart lies with the underprivileged neighbourhood kids she'd previously taught dance classes to. With cameos by top acts such as Tweet and Missy Elliott, there's plenty for fans of the music to enjoy, even if the cautionary tale is as simplistic as it is idealistic. The visuals and styling also add to the “ghetto fabulous” energy, though the corny dialogue and stereotypical characters do the film no favours. Alba looks fabulous and she certainly has the moves, but it's child actors Lil' Romeo and Zachary Isaiah Williams who steal the show.

    Depends on your taste

If you enjoy dance videos, or Hip Hop, you will like this. Its tbe sort of film whereby you have to like the subject to like the actual film. Its like, if you dont like war films, your probably not going to enjoy Pearl Harbour, simply because its a film about war.

Great Dancing Sad About the Acting

Jessica Alba is extremely pretty in a Jennifer Lopez type of way and her acting is basically in the same vein. The dancing sequences are stunningly put together and filmed. Unfortunately, the acting and story are very much in the same vein as Flashdance, Breakdance, Footloose, etc. It is not very good but the finale will trick you into thinking you watched a great film. The Hip-Hop music is fab as well.

    Roberts breath woes on set

    • 13 Apr 2009

Julia Roberts' love of peanut butter sandwiches caused a stink on the set of her new film Duplicity - she had bad breath during her love scenes with co-star Clive Owen. Pretty Woman star Roberts and Owen have been firm friends since starring together in 2004's Closer, and Roberts insists it made her more comfortable shooting the saucy scenes in their new movie. But she often munched peanut butter sandwiches between takes - forcing her to freshen up before filming the intimate scenes. Roberts... Read more
