Chow Yun Fat gives an early award winning performance in this moving drama about two young men who become friends and then both fall in love with the same woman. Set in Hong Kong in 1941 (As the film's title would suggest.), the story concerns the three's attempts to escape from Hong Kong when the Japanese invade, making life difficult for the residents.
More acting than action, this film shows there is more to Chow Yun Fat than just having guns blazing. This is one of those fantastic Hong Kong Legends DVD releases so I watched it twice. Once for the film and once with the audio commentary from Bey Logan which was informative and gave great historical background to the fictionalised events of a peroid where these things did happen. Touching and sad in places, this is a worthy drama that is sadly underrated.
Dont bother watching boring no fighting.
