Power is measured in enemies
By a customer from not where i wanna be , 13 Feb 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
In 1930's Harlem, ex-con turned kingpin Fishburne battles volatile gangster Roth and slick pimp Garcia for control of the numbers racket. Well-crafted and designed, with a solid performance from Fishburne and a dynamite performance from Roth, but overlength and the genre's usual contrivances stop it from being a direct hit.- Was this review helpful to you?

(8)ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT
By Whoflungdung74 (30 reviews) , 05 Sep 2012This is one of the best gangster movies i've ever seen, not seen it since purchasing on VHS when first released. It's got a great story line and the cast play their parts well, Tim Roth is especially brilliant playing a ruthless 'New York' gangster. Laurence Fishburne is brilliantly cool as always. Great film.- Was this review helpful to you?

FANTASTIC THROUGHOUT
By Riley_Serola (19 reviews) from London , 05 Feb 2012The film moved at the right pace.
It was extremely engaging with plot that made real sense. I feel that Laurence Fishburn did not steal the show as there were a lot of other big characters.
There was a healthy balance of gang violence and real dialogue to set the pace of the story. Most of all the movie was not predictable.
Definitely recommend, I cannot understand how it has an average rating of 3 stars. FIVE STARZ all throughout.- Was this review helpful to you?

Tone of this was all over the place
By Harv (40 reviews) from London , 10 Aug 2009The tone of this was all over the place. Tom Roth was obviously having a lot of fun and was over the top compared to others like Andy Garcia. I would have prefered it if it had been a more serious rather than slipping into comedy all the time.- Was this review helpful to you?

Hoodlum
By shaffo (2 reviews) from Oxford , 12 Jun 2008slow movie, music is awfull, and the camera work is dire to say the least, it feels more like an early 80's movie, in no way comprable to the godfather trilogy. Dissapointing really, with a very cheezy ending !
