Hook

Director Steven Spielberg brings J.M. Barrie's PETER PAN to the screen with a delightfully modernized twist. Forty-year-old Peter (Robin Williams) has grown up to be a workaholic lawyer with more affection for his cell phone than his wife and two children. When the family travels to England to visit Granny Wendy (Maggie Smith), Peter's son and daughter are kidnapped by the villainous Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman). Peter's faithful pal, Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts), helps him return to Neverland--'Second star to the right and straight on `til morning'--to the world Peter has forgotten. There the Lost Boys welcome Peter back and try to get him in shape for his fight with Captain Hook. Peter must somehow remember his long-forgotten boyhood in Neverland and learn how to fly again before he can rescue his children away from the evil clutches of Captain Hook. Bob Hoskins costars as Hook's right-hand man, Smee, and Gwyneth Paltrow, in her first film role, plays the young Wendy. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Song for John Williams's 'When You're Alone'.

Purists will shudder at what Steven Spielberg has done to JM Barrie's classic tale, but their protests are likely to be ignored by those children who prefer old-fashioned derring-do to be brightened up with some 1990s trimmings. In this take on Peter Pan, Robin Williams is the grown-up Peter, a ruthless business pirate who has no time for his family and no memory of his magical past. That all changes, however, when his children are kidnapped and he gets a visit from Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts). As good as Williams is, the film is stolen by an almost unrecognisable Dustin Hoffman, whose Hook is suitably pantomimic (he is said to have modelled his performance partly on the larger-than-life screen image of Terry-Thomas) yet oddly sympathetic, a villain lost without his nemesis. The scenes between him and Bob Hoskins as Smee are a delight and, although the sentimentality gets a little sticky at times, this remains rousing entertainment.

Sprawling, overlong, often camp extravaganza with splendid special effects and settings that may appeal to the small child in most of us, even if it is time that Spielberg himself grew up.

    An entertaining journey

Hook is entertaining. The children will love the film with its over sized and colourful sets and at the same time will keep the adults mildly entertained. There is a great score by the ever reliable John Williams to help the pace and with good acting by Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman to compliment the film. There is a great scene with the kids at meal time which will bring a smile to any child and adult. Overall a good film and is worthy of being one of those Sunday afternoon family get togethers around the TV.

    A modern version.....

Light hearted Americanised Peter Pan with traditional and modern elements of the well loved fairy tale.

Who can fault any work that Robin Williams does and Dustin Hoffman plays a believable Hook, best bit is the food fight and the end battle scene, kept the kids entertained on a wet Sunday!

Julia Roberts to re-team with Clive Owen

    • 01 Nov 2007

Oscar-winning actress Julia Roberts is set to co-star once again with Clive Owen in a new project entitled Duplicity, Variety reported this week. Previously, the pair featured as a married couple in Closer, a story of love and infidelity also starring Jude Law and Natalie Portman. Duplicity, however, looks to have a slightly different focus, with Roberts and Owen playing lovers who are actually spies for opposite sides. They then team up to stage a heist and con their bosses. Both actors have... Read more
