This animated feature was the second (the first was Gulliver's Travels) and final attempt from the Fleischer Brothers to win one over on Mr Disney. In this they failed, not because this full length cartoon is bad - it's certainly not, but it failed to grab the public on its release, mainly because of the unfortunate timing - two days after the bombing of Pearl Harbour. Originally titled, 'Mr Bug Goes To Town', a parody of 'Mr Deeds Goes To Town', the story relates the enforced move of a colony of insects from their inner city wasteland home when a skyscraper is erected on the plot. The film celebrates progress and Modernity and mirrors the American Dream via its sub plot, the rags to riches story of an aspiring songwriter.

I much prefer the work of the Fleischers to that of Disney - theirs contains far more wit, dark humour and parody and much of their output is not primarily for children - like all good animation, it's multi-layered and thus suitable for a wider audience (early Popeye, Betty Boop etc). To be fair, early Disney also has these attributes but post 'Snow White' the work becomes increasingly sugary, and Disneyfication via theme parks and branding becomes the dominating force.

'Hoppity' is well worth a look - I've given it 3 stars mainly because of the poor transfer quality (the film is now in the public domain so anyone can release it, this version coming from what looks like a video transfer as opposed to 35mm stock). Having said this it's not awful, just a bit 'watery'. It'll keep the family happy for 70 or so minutes and it remains the original 'Bug' cartoon that helped inspire 'A Bug's Life and Antz(?).

Full of nostalgia for an age long gone - entertainment for adults and kids. They don't make em like this anymore

My dad recorded this at Christmas years ago when I was a kid, assuring us that we would love it and boy did we! I think the video tape eventually wore out...

Viewing again as an adult, this film hasn't lost anything for me and is still great for all to watch.

  • An Old Childhood Favourite

My Mum watched this as a child and loved it. Therefore in return my mum recorded VHS one day this film and Gullivers Travels. My brothers' and I watched it many, many times we even knew the dialogue and the lyrics to the songs. I rented this to show my children and wondered if the age of the film would capture their imaginations compared to the CGI technology of today's kids films? Well, they loved it as much as I did. Watched it, laughed all the way through it and wanted to watch it again!

The only downfall I have is the picture quality of the movie, but then, it was made in the 40's. A definite movie I would recommend to show the kids.
