Horatio Hornblower joins the Navy at 17 in 'The Even Chance' as a Midshipman, in 1793 at the start of the Napoleonic Wars. After an initially shaky start, he begins to make his mark and show his true colours. The remainder of the (now eight) films show his gradual rise through the ranks.

Wilberforce will be played by Ioan Gruffudd (Hornblower, Black Hawk Down) and along with Gambon (The Browning Version, Gosford Park) the cast will include Albert Finney and Rufus Sewell (Dark City)...
