Probably a buy after you tried (it out)

I'm not actually a huge fan of Eric Johnson's music - don't particular like what appears to me an awkward mixture of his obvious influences, particularly Jimi Hendrix, and his personal compositional and vocal style. However this is the type of instructional video I like - not painting by numbers/join the dots going through whole songs but using numerous short examples to illustrate particular aspects of technique. Includes much detail regarding different ways to both plectrum and finger pick, finer aspects of left hand playing such as adjacent string muting. Realistically you are not gonna be able to play any of this unless you are an advanced player but all players will benefit from seeing it since it really demonstrates how an apparently small alteration to the way you pick, do vibrato etc. can end up creating a particular sound eg. he describes how Clapton did vibrato with Cream and when he then plays it does pretty much sound like the real thing. Player's styles dealt with are Hendrix, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Wes Montgomery, Jeff Beck, Clapton, Keith Richards, Lenny Breau - he's got some of these down better than others, but more importantly it's about taking a more considered and subtle approach rather than just plucking the thing in that same old way you (I) always do.- Was this review helpful to you?
