Heart Wrenching Drama
By James Waddell from London, UK , 17 Apr 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
I found this to be a heart wrenching eye-opening film. I can't pretend to know much of Rwanda's history and therefore cannot comment on the film's bias. What I can comment on is the power with which Don Cheadle plays his role. He brings wonderful humanity and warmth to his character and is the key to the movie's success. Nolte's General seems very misplaced however.
Some of the scenes are disturbing and some viewers may find them hard to stomach. However, these scenes add to the storyline and are a necessary part of the film. The film is shot a little like a documentary, which gives it a more human and earthy feel. Prepare to be moved by the injustice of international politics and its ability to ignore human suffering. For that is what this movie dishes out in bucket loads.- Was this review helpful to you?

Very very good
By rhjacques (2 reviews) , 26 Sep 2012Fantastic film.
Based on a true story, Don Cheadle delivers one of the finest acting performences I have ever seen as hotellier Paul Rusesabagina.
The film is set during the 1994 Rwandan Genocide and revolves around Paul's battle to save his fellow civilians from Hutu millitias.
The key to the success of the film is it's ability to convey the growing desperation of those in the hotel. This is down to brilliant acting and superb direction.
Although harrowing in places, the film manages to convey the horrors of the Rwandan genocide without becoming too grotesque. Violence is used sparingly in the film, only when absolutely neccessary.
This is one of the best films I have seen in years and well worth a watch.- Was this review helpful to you?
