    House Formula Stales Quickly

Gnarly House MD faces the same trials, and solves them the same way, week in week out in this formulaic American series.

House will show us that he won't be pushed around by the hospital bosses, who seem insistent on making him do something he really doesn't want to do, namely help patients. He will belittle his three (three!) sidekicks, yet they will still adore and respect him.

Someone will come in with a seemingly untreatable disease, then someone else - usually a child - will come in to be treated by him during which he will realise the answer to the episode's main raison d'etre illness, and a lightbulb moment will occur.

All the time you keep expecting Hugh Laurie to burst into the costume of the Prince Regent in Blackadder 3 as his acting just isn't good enough to convince us. It's better than that of his dubious sidekicks, especially the English/Australian guy who is hopeless.

Pretty poor. Get Scrubs instead if you insist on indulging the never-ending fascination with hospital drama/comedy.

    Medical propaganda?

'House MD' starts out with a good premise ("ER meets CSI"), to deliver little more than bad propaganda.

Each part follows the same pattern: a mysterious disease -- protracted diagnostics by a team of doctors -- a happy ending with a cured patient. A key idea of the series is that doctors are hyper-brilliant and deeply committed to their work, whereas patients are stupid, malingering liars. In each case, the medics only fail to come up with the correct diagnosis right away because their patients give them the wrong information.

Along the way, Dr House throws in acerbic remarks about patients who don't believe in vaccination and all the other wonders bestowed upon us by drug companies. This makes you wonder if this TV series is not sponsored, in some way or another, by pharmaceutical interests.

'House' is scripted and acted well enough not bore you to death. But the message it labours to get across -- that doctors really ARE right about everything -- is slightly sickening.

    Laurie's suicide pact

    • 07 Jun 2009

House star Hugh Laurie made a suicide pact with his friends as a teenager - they all vowed to end their lives shortly before their 40th birthday. The actor admits when he was 18, he was terrified about getting old and promised to kill himself rather than reach middle-age. But Laurie, who will turn 50 on 11 June (09), insists he never seriously considered following through with his threat. He says, "I made a pact with friends when we were 18 that we'd kill ourselves before we got to 40. It... Read more
