Rob Zombie, the heavy metal hero who has released such albums as SINISTER URGE and HELLBILLY DELUXE as a solo act and ASTRO-CREEP 2000 with his band, White Zombie, takes on the world of horror movies in this very bloody, very entertaining tale that rips off the old car-trouble story in which a group of unsuspecting travellers .. US rock star Rob Zombie is well known for his love of old horror films, so it's no surprise that his directorial debut takes a warped trip into the heart of B-movie-style terror. A homage to the so-called grindhouse schlockers of the 1970s (most infamously The Texas Chain Saw Massacre), Zombie's self-penned story of two young couples falling victim to a sadistic family of inbred sickos is a low-budget nightmare with a big-budget feel. Derivative, yet darkly entertaining, the oddball feature makes up for an unfortunate lack of gore with inspired imagery, innovative cinematography and some fabulously freaky performances. Standing out in particular is Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2's Bill Moseley, who, as psychopathic albino Otis, adds a real note of dread to proceedings. Viewed solely as exploitation cinema, the film is effective, while Zombie marks himself out as a name to watch. Sadly though, no matter how visually pleasing, the tale as a whole really is too quirky and incoherent to appeal much beyond its core horror audience.
Unoriginal, low-budget, gore-filled tribute to horror movies of the past, particularly The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
So this is what it's like to get stuck inside an Iron Maiden album cover. Zombie (not his real name) sings in metal... read more on Time Out
Jerry, Bill, Mary, and Denise are two couples out on the road in hopes of writing a book on offbeat roadside attractions. When the four meet Captain Spaulding, they learn of the legend of Dr. Satan, a local serial killer who would brutalize his victims. And so they take off in search of finding the tree that Dr. Satan was hung from, but on the way they pick up hitchhiker Baby. When their car breaks down, Baby invites them into her house which is nearby. This is where they meet the Firefly family, a murderous clan of bizarre people. As the family attacks the unsuspecting couples, Jerry and his friends try to survive the house of 1000 corpses and it's dark secrets.
House of 1000 corpses never takes itself too seriously, but still manages to remain quite atmospheric and dark. Rob Zombie, the musician, wrote and directesd this film which is a parody and homage to the 70's slasher flicks that he grew up on.
The film had production troubles from the outset, firstly in trying to find a company willing to produce this, as they all thought it too sick, and then in distributing it, as many cuts had to be made to get it released here in the UK. This release is a good 15 minutes shorter than the orginal shown at the Mar de Plata Film Festival and these cuts HAVE affected the film.
With all the cuts, the amount of gore on show in this film has been reduced dramatically, although some sick scenes do still remain. te acting for the most part is good, and Baby especially is great. She is married to Rob Zombie in real life and manages to look smoking throughout!
Seen by many as almost a direct ripoff of the Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, this elevates itself above it by parodying it so greatly. Captain Spaulding is one of the greatest characters in this film, and easily one of the sickest. His sense of humour is morbid and sarcastic, which makes him perfect to laugh at.
Don't take this film seriously, don't go in with any preconceptions about it and you WILL take something away from it.
There was alot of anticipation surrounding this movie before it's release so i didn't really know quite what to expect, but being a true horror fan myself, it was well up there in my 'must see' movie list.
For those of you who think that films like 'scream' and 'i know what you did last summer' were true horror pieces, then you ain't seen nothing yet.
If you want your horror films full of madness, macarbe, insanity and a whole lotta lunatics running around, then this is one flick you cannot ignore.
Up there with the likes of 'Texas Chainsaw', and the 'Hills have eyes'?...I think so!
I would like to start by giving a huge pat on the back to Mr Rob Zombie, him of WhiteZombie fame. It came as a nice suprise for me that Mr Zombie was making a film. I didn't need to be told that he wasn't making a romantic comedy or a remake of The Bridges of Madison county. The movie is, if I am to critique it fairly, a little disjointed. This is redeemable though because it just gives it more of a sense of madness. The family portrayed are the most heart warmingly endearing family since the Chainsaw Massacre. I love a movie where I root for the bad guys. Anti-hero's R us. It really is an homage to those '70's flicks such as Chainsaw and Just before dawn(81). I would encourage anyone to watch this movie just for Captain Spaulding played by Sid Haig, he of Spider baby fame to name one of his movies. His performance is worthy of any major loon that ever was. I would advise you to see both House of 1000 corpses and Devils Rejects back to back with beer, pizza and dancing girls!!

This film by Rob Zombie is pure classic horror. There are no twists, though in parts the photographic direction is quite art house. This film is brilliant combining the texas chainsaw mascare with the people under the stair and a touch of house on haunted hill. The director and writer has one of the largest horror cataloges in the world ( acording to mtv cribs)at present and it shows in this film. If there is such a thing as a line you shouldn't cross in horror groseness he has crossed it. In short a must see for true horror fans. If your a teen horror movie fan don't bother.
This movie has attracted far more than its fair share of criticism and yes it does steal a great deal from the Texas Chainsaw massacre and several other horror movies but at the end of the day I would highly recommend it. In fact I think it is one of the best horror films of recent years. It is a disturbing tale and not for everyone (my girlfriend lasted about 20 minutes) but if you like your horror films to leave you feeling minorly violated this is undoubtedly one of the best of the genre. Rob Zombie's sound track suits it to a T and I hope he produces more like this. If you like your horror movies gruesome and twisted rent this movie I thought it was great.
Seriously this film is tripe. It is possibly the poorest excuse for a horror film i have seen in a long time.
You have NO idea what is going on, and the obcenities just become dull, boring and rinsed.
Give it a miss.
wont waste my brain cells reviewing this, I wasted enough watching it.
If you want a deep and thought provoking horror film that makes you ponder the hidden depths of the characters minds then this isnt going to be for you.
But, if you just want a bizarre, funny and enjoyable horror flick then this will suit you perfectly.
OK, plain and simple IT'S CRAP.
Was expecting a whole lot more from Rob Zombie...... stick with the singing mate.
Otis Driftwood is so cool! I watched this with a few friends. Otis had these cheer leaders tied up and was spouting his political ideas at them about breaking free from conformity, etc. That is so me! Hhahah, not really. But if I were a murderous kidnapper, I would definitely be like Otis.
Seriously though, this movie is inventive. It has a Texas Chainsaw Massacre feel to it, but goes in another direction. Some of it is pretty abstract, so it isn't for people trying to make sense of everything. But the plot is solid. No, the plot isn't amazing or anything, but it's horror. I highly recommend this for serious horror fans. It can freak some people out, not for the faint of heart.
