  • A rollercoaster ride of fun and gore!

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Jerry, Bill, Mary, and Denise are two couples out on the road in hopes of writing a book on offbeat roadside attractions. When the four meet Captain Spaulding, they learn of the legend of Dr. Satan, a local serial killer who would brutalize his victims. And so they take off in search of finding the tree that Dr. Satan was hung from, but on the way they pick up hitchhiker Baby. When their car breaks down, Baby invites them into her house which is nearby. This is where they meet the Firefly family, a murderous clan of bizarre people. As the family attacks the unsuspecting couples, Jerry and his friends try to survive the house of 1000 corpses and it's dark secrets.

House of 1000 corpses never takes itself too seriously, but still manages to remain quite atmospheric and dark. Rob Zombie, the musician, wrote and directesd this film which is a parody and homage to the 70's slasher flicks that he grew up on.

The film had production troubles from the outset, firstly in trying to find a company willing to produce this, as they all thought it too sick, and then in distributing it, as many cuts had to be made to get it released here in the UK. This release is a good 15 minutes shorter than the orginal shown at the Mar de Plata Film Festival and these cuts HAVE affected the film.

With all the cuts, the amount of gore on show in this film has been reduced dramatically, although some sick scenes do still remain. te acting for the most part is good, and Baby especially is great. She is married to Rob Zombie in real life and manages to look smoking throughout!

Seen by many as almost a direct ripoff of the Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, this elevates itself above it by parodying it so greatly. Captain Spaulding is one of the greatest characters in this film, and easily one of the sickest. His sense of humour is morbid and sarcastic, which makes him perfect to laugh at.

Don't take this film seriously, don't go in with any preconceptions about it and you WILL take something away from it.

  • A total cult classic - a must for horror fans

    Rated - 4.5 stars

This film is a must for horror fanatics like myself. It has an air of Rocky Horror with the tongue-in-cheek manner it is filmed, the camaraderie and characterization including the costumes, make-up and utterly fantastic gothic setting.

Sid Haig is the star of the show followed closely by Bill Moseley as Otis. I love both of these characters - everything about them is genius.

This is a spoof of classics such as 'texas chainsaw massacre', the family are truely as freaky as you could imagine with mutilation, kidnap, torture, murder and anything else gross you can think of thrown in. Beware it is very gorey and certainly not for the faint-hearted.

I would recommend reading the background of the film if you are a fan, the idea behind it etc helps appreciate it for what it is. Personally I love it, you just don't know what's going to happen next, the characters are amazing as is the whole setting. The only thing I would moan about is Baby - she does get on my pip a bit but she's still a great character and gorgeous of course.

I loved this film. It is not for you purist nor does it appeal to the artist, those of a delicate disposition nor anyone who wants a 'serious' movie.... However it is one hell of a romp... and if you find any merits in this one, check out what is purely a higher budget remake also by Rob Z, pretty much the same cast too but MUCH better... Devils Rejects. I wish he had done more. I have a snobby arty side but love to role around in the gutter from time to time and better trash than this you can not find! :)

  • Zombie robs me of an hour and a half of my life (geddit?)

Wow, a totally turgid film from a total moron, I should have expected it to be dreadful (oh wait, I did, why the hell did I watch this?), and it was dreadful. I think I've now seen three Rob Zombie films and must conclude that he is one of the least talented directors in the history of cinema. Avoid this film, and don't even be tempted by hearing how bad it is (like I was), instead invest your time in something worthwhile like knitting, baking or sleeping, all much more fun. Oh, and drinking. The one plus side of this is it has given me a furious thirst.

This film is bonkers! Well worth a watch. I was pleasantly surprised. Lots of gore and creepy/comical characters. Albeit an almost predictable storyline; it still manages to grab your attention. Thumbs up...
