  • A great example of its time

This is the quintessential 60's light comedy, slick Hollywood at its best. Ardent feminists may get the vapours, but really it's just a product of its time, and well re-mastered too. Great performances - Lemmon in his prime, Terry-Thomas proving just how good he really was, and heaps of glamour and indeed talent from an exceptional supporting cast. Virna Lisi is the eye-candy, and a script by George Axelrod - it's a classic all round. No heavy political comment, but if you fancy a light frothy romp, you won't be disappointed.

  • How To Seduce Your Wife

I enjoyed this classic even though it's chock full of misogyny and one can still remember the general morality of the late 50s to mid 60s which celebrated marriage as life's ultimate goal. This is funny in a saucy seaside postcard way. It has some great laugh out loud moments and Virna Lisi is both seductively sexy and lovable. It's a great Saturday afternoon date movie.

  • Disappointing and dated

I wanted to like this one as I like a lot of Jack Lemmon's movies. This one has dated a great deal though - somehow the whole premise of the film just doesn't seem funny these days. Maybe it's something in the script - which after all is the essence of any comedy. There were one or two lines that briefly raised a smile but nothing memorable as in the Billy Wilder-penned Some Like It Hot or The Apartment.

Jack Lemmon gets through it OK but I'm left with the feeling that it was just something a bit cranked out to cash in on previous success. Terry-Thomas doesn't overdo it too much as an English butler in New York.

Jack Lemmon was a very good comedy actor, who appeared in several hit films.

This must be his worst film. The pace was too slow, and the story not very funny.

I had high hopes for this. I like Jack (who doesnt). It hard not to love Terry-Thomas and the idea of a cartoonist making enough money to have a Butler and act out all of his storylines is agreeably stupid. But god; the shouting, the tediously long takes, the mannered acting. The no jokes at all. And above all the sledgehammer mysogyny. Yes i know there's a clue in the title but it was all so witless and lacking in charm. I think any material is viable so long as it is done with style. But I actually got the impression that the creators of this film actively disliked women. awful.

  • A Laugh Feast

    Rated - 4.0 stars

A star line-up of comedy performers make this film a frantic, hilarious laugh feast. Headed by Jack Lemmon and aided by his gentleman's gentleman Terry Thomas, his hen pecked lawyer Eddie Mayhoff and the hen who is pecking him Claire Trevor, taking time off from playing drunken tarts with hearts and his friendly physician Jack Albertson. A successful cartoonist (Lemmon) awakens after a stag party for a friend has gone pear shaped to find himself married to a gorgeous Italian girl (Virna Lisi) who came out of a cake. His cartoon character Private Eye Bash Brannigan turns from action man to overweight, out of condition hen pecked husband as does the cartoonist. The comedy centre around his attempts to get rid of his wife, even contemplating - murder!
