Sassy, wise-cracking human sized duck Howard is going about his day to day life on his home planet, when an experiment involving a laser beam on far flung planet Earth drags him halfway across the cosmos to Cleveland, USA. Howard is understandably unsettled, but soon makes close friends with singer Beverly Switzler (Lea Thompson), who helps protect him from the greedy scientists responsible for his intergalactic expedition. But matters soon turn from bad to worse, when an evil alien invader appears through the laser beam and takes possession of scientist Dr Jenning (Jeffrey Jones), leaving his assistant Phil (Tim Robbins) and the giant duck in a fight for their very existence.

Toned down from an adult comic strip, this peculiar film has nowhere to go because it's too sexy for kids and too stupid for adults.
Howard T Duck, of Marvel Comics, might well have a beef against Lucasfilm for transforming his magnetic comic strip... read more on Time Out
The first time I seen this movie I was about 8 years of age, and I thought it was amazing. Should have been released earlier on dvd. Will be looking forward to see it again. Howard the duck is so funny, Lea Thompson character is amuzing, a good movie for all the family.
Well, firstly, anyone watching this movie should forget the critical drubbing it has had and sit back and enjoy a truly entertaining movie and remember that it is a pre-digital era creature that the movie is named after.
Even after all of these years, I found the film entertaining and fresh and certainly undeserving of the one and two star ratings offered by the reviewers in today's DVD magazines.
Bearing in mind that this is a pre-digital era movie, the effects are excellent and, even if the duck costume is left wanting, the actual character is the same as the one in the comics. However, if there are any shortcomings, it is in the performances of the human actors. A couple of whom act as if they had no faith in the project and were simply there beause they had been paid to be.
I think that any attempt to remake, as is currently being rumoured, will be to reliant on digital trickery and this Howard will be recognised for the entertaining family treasure that it is.
You'll believe a duck can't fly!
