Sweet without being sentimental: teenagers fall in and out of love, and don’t always get what they want, just like real life. The Welsh setting gave it a freshness, and for once the teachers in the staff-room were treated with realism. I was a teacher in 1976 in just such a school, and recognised a lot of the petty rivalries of staff protecting their own areas of ‘expertise’. Back then, O-Levels would end in about the third week of June, but term went on for a further month, so the idea of putting on a show in such an apparently short time - just three weeks before the students leave - wasn’t as unrealistic as some have suggested; and the understated self-revelation of the one gay character was handled without sensationalism. Slight, yes - but thoroughly enjoyable.

  • A British feel about real people that isn't an embarassment

This was a lovingly made, undemanding watch. Don't expect too much of it and you'll enjoy it. Minnie Driver pulls off a great Welsh accent, and the songs (even the ones by E. L. O.) sound truly heartfelt and affecting. Aneurin Barnard is a star in the making.

  • okay but out-of-time period howlers

Mildly enjoyable film made by Welsh film foundation with lottery money. Obviously done on a very low budget. However, for somebody who was in their early twenties in summer 1976, the year the film was set, I noticed some real out-of-period howlers. They use a P. O. payphone box of the glass wall style that was first introduced in the late 1980's (and there are still quite a few old-style boxes still around -you can even find them in scrapyards). They name-check pop/punk bands that hadn't been formed or risen to any prominence in 1976 and use felt pens and teaching methods in the classroom not introduced till the 80's. Obviously written/directed by people who were in nappies in 1976. Even the end credits had a howler as they thank the 'Aegis Film Find' for support just above the correctly spelt Aegis Film Fund logo. Despite the howlers it was an okay if very obvious story ending. Good singing by the principals and Minnie Driver has an excellent voice - she was going to be a professional singer before she was offered an acting role. She's released around three good cd albums in the last ten years -worth searching out.

The 70's in this movie is so much nicer/cleaner/cooler than I remember it. I made it to 37mins then decided to clean the crumbs out of the toaster.

Oh I LOVE Briish films like this - honesty and a faithful showing of normal kids in normal surroundings albeit Swansea in the 70s. Loved the songs.....and the singing and the show was the only thing I thought was a bit 'well done'....budgets are always low in schools so scenery and orchestras tend to be less ambitious...but allow that because it was so lovely and I loved Aneurin Barnard's voice.. a sort of David Essex figure!! Plot was a mix but entertaining and sad.....ahh good Brit film...well done Lottery Fund.....loved it including the little section during the credits that told you what happened to the main players as they grew up......
