A Successful Re-modelling
By Kingsley Canham from Norwich, England , 26 Oct 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
By chance, I purchased an American dvd copy of the 1934 Margaret Sullavan film, THE GOOD FAIRY, directed by William Wyler just prior to renting I'LL BE YOURS. Wyler's film is a classic comedy with dramatic overtones, featuring one of my favourite actresses, so I was a little wary when the credits of I'LL BE YOURS revealed that it was a remake of the Wyler film.
I need not have worried as both films share a common strength - a simple story well told and played by some of Hollywood's finest supporting actors. Adolphe Menjou looks like a caricature of his lecherous businessman, who would like to take a more personal interest in Deanna, but his performance is impeccable in its shading and delivery.
The real surprise of the film is the deftness and subtlety of William Bendix's timing as her mentor. The music - particularly Granada, shot with a fluid camera moving around a ballroom floor, and seamlessly intercutting closeups, whilst the talented Deanna sings as she dances, and the classic Love's Old Sweet Song add an extra sparkle to this charming musical - probably one of Deanna Durbin's best films.
William A Seiter may not be in the same class of directing as William Wyler, but his films seldom disappoint.- Was this review helpful to you?

Bit unbelievable but fun!
By Jan Moss from Embsay, North Yorkshire , 01 Dec 2006For some reason I've had a run on the Deanna Durbin films and feel like I've been watching her grow up! She was a bit older than some in this one and has become a very sophisticated young woman. Most of the films so far must have been very risque in their day and this is no exception. Another rainy day Sunday film. Good viewing.- Was this review helpful to you?

Feel good again
By Ellen Stevenson from Dumfries , 14 Nov 2006Unfortunately this film only had one good song in my opinion and that was 'Granada'. Deanna Durbin was a great singer so I was sorry they didn't use her talents to the full. However, it had the usual 'Feel Good' factor.- Was this review helpful to you?
