ARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH! Ouch that was the most painful experience - ONLY watch this is you have a very strong desire to involve yourself with all things Bob Dylan. COnfused, well acted but totally pointless......

Original and fascinating, tedious and pretentious in equal measure, this is really only for die hard fans. My interest drifted throughout but was occasionally rescued by the splendid soundtrack and Cate Blanchett's rambling but rivetting performance.- Was this review helpful to you?

very confusing

The many faces of the great Bob Dylan.
By Filmyup (16 reviews) , 03 Sep 2012The film's fragmentary, meandering and (yes) self-indulgent nature is sure to receive impetuous scorn from viewers expecting something more inside the box.
However, I loved how fun, fresh covers of Dylan's classic tunes were intertwined with dramatic backstory. Cate Blanchett puts in one of the most outstanding performances I've ever seen, giving a feminine vulnerability to Dylan I never thought possible.
Part of me felt a bit dismayed after the film ended. The image of unshakeable and pious integrity Dylan creates through his songs is in contrast to the vices and apathy portrayed in his real life. It just goes to show how despite any talents we have we're all susceptible to hypocrisy and mistakes.
Perhaps a film only for those who love the music Bob Dylan created and are consequently fascinated about his life and the background in which these songs were created.- Was this review helpful to you?

One star for one of the worst movies I have EVER seen...
By Damo666E (30 reviews) from London , 07 Jul 2012I am a massive Bob Dylan fan, but this wasn't for me. One of the most pretentious things I have ever seen. I made it most of the way through with a couple of scenes that actually grabbed my attention, but for the most part (99. 9% of it) it was absolutely pretentious drivel.
It is not even in the same ballpark of awful awful as 'Tree of Life' which still wins all the Oscars for most self indulgent crap which fails to deliver on every level. This is interesting in it's own way, great cast, someone has obviously taken a hell of a lot of time and energy to make it, production of it is outstanding, but it just tries to be too clever.
The problem is with clever is it needs to be clever in sequence, like 'Ides of March', the best film I have seen in the last year. This is trying to be clever out of sequence, and it isn't clever anyway, so it unfortunately falls down into a pit of varied scenes which make no sense, with glimpses of brilliance drowning in a sea of wannabe arty turds.
I am going to now have a poo and deliberate what I have just seen, not so much a failure of a movie, just a disappointment in comparison to what it should / could have been.- Was this review helpful to you?
