They're not Vampires or Zombies...
By Vivacia (28 reviews) from London , 02 Jan 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
First off let's get some points straight. 'I Am Legend' is NOT based on Omega Man, 28 Days Later or any other 'zombie movie'. Instead it is an adaptation of an excellent little book from the 1950s called 'I Am Legend', written by Richard Matheson, which was in fact the inspiration for the above movies. Sadly the excellence of the book doesn't quite translate but this is still the best attempt so far to capture Matheson's story on screen.
Our 'hero' is Robert Neville, the last surviving man of an epidemic that swept across the United States and then the world, destroying the whole populace. But it didn't kill everyone as many were turned into mutant like creatures that stalk the night, eating any living thing they come across. During the day Robert must see to his own needs and try to cope with being alone for so long, with only a dog to keep him company. And this is where Will Smith excels, capturing the madness that is slowly taking over Robert's mind. From his conversations with mannequins in the DVD rental store to his accurate quotations from Shrek 2, Will Smith brilliantly plays a man on the verge of a breakdown. And mention must be made of the dog, possibly the best animal performance in film since Pirates Of the Caribbean's undead monkey.
Unfortunately despite the brilliant atmosphere of 'I Am Legend' (if you thought London looked creepy in '28 Days Later' wait until you see New York), combined with impressive performances from the lead, this isn't enough to entirely save a film from it's two major flaws: the ending and the 'mutants'. The zombies in 'Shaun Of The Dead' were more impressive than the creatures in this film. The director Francis Lawrence seems to have liked the CGI used on the city so much he decided to use it again for the mutants. Entirely. This makes them seem more cartoon than anything else and definitely decreases the fear factor substantially. Secondly is the ending which, without spoiling it, is nothing like the book and feels rushed rather than satisfying, though it does get the job done.
'I Am Legend' is really a 3 star film, but is lifted to 4 stars due to Will Smith, the dog, and the valiant attempt to deal with a complex psychological issue set in a terrifying situation. If you're after a scary horror film look elsewhere, but if you'd like to see an alternative treatment of the vampire/zombie genre (as the creatures are not referred to as either it's up to you which term to use), this is definitely worth a look.- Was this review helpful to you?

(1542)What a completely unsatisfactory ending.
By MDE1138 (42 reviews) , 13 Dec 2012Well, you've gotta hand it to the test audiences for ruining a perfectly decent film. Other than the hate, kill, destroy ending that was imposed on us because a few people didn't get the original ending, it was a pretty decent film.- Was this review helpful to you?

I am a Leg End
By GordonVader (105 reviews) from Emerald City, oz , 24 Sep 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
Bloody awful attempt at Richard Matheson's legendary book by the same name (which is also about the last man on earth and his nightly fight against the vampire/zombie thingies just in case anyone thinks the name is co incidence)
Ignores the entire point of the book and indeed the title and instead becomes a will smith saves the world ( again! ) movie...
I would have hated this film less if they;d called it Will smith Zombie Killer- Was this review helpful to you?

Excellent movie - Would be even better if they used the Alt ending
By a customer , 12 Sep 2012Excellent movie. Disregard negative reviews.
Its not a movie I can say much about without giving the plot away. But be assured if you have some imagination you will very much enjoy this.
Observations/Critique:
I counted four deleted scenes two of which were really crucial to to understanding Smiths Character. Simply dont understand why this has been cut out for the on line streaming version. There is a particular 15 second scene which has been cut and it really is crucial to the film imho
There is also an alternate ending of this movie which really is much more satisfying and anyone who has seen it is an agreement. The alternate ending clearly makes the Sequel possible and completely plausible. I suggest after you watch this version you seek out the alternate ending.
Interestingly, when they did the audience previews in the US before the film was released it was in fact the alternate ending which was preferred by the majority. Yet the version which went on general release (in Europe for sure) contained this ending. But dont let what Im saying put you off watching this version. Its still excellent.
Along with Enemy OF The State this is Will Smiths best performance. In fact I would say this is his best. As he matures hes turning out to be a very accomplished actor.
PS
Sam is a great actor. Better than many human actors.- Was this review helpful to you?

Could have been much more
By GarethFlatlands (6 reviews) , 10 Sep 2012Beautifully shot but the plot was pretty weak. Full of coincidences, holes and inconsistencies. Add the generic bad guys and the terrible ending and this is sadly a wasted opportunity. An excellent advert against studio interference.- Was this review helpful to you?

Remake this one in the future
By Abby88 (167 reviews) from Bognor Regis , 27 Aug 2012I like this film. Its interesting and engaging. The bad CGI is distracting and there are bits that could be better, but overall its good to see.- Was this review helpful to you?
